Why do people call their motorcycle a bike not a moke?

"Bicycle" is shortened to "bike". "Tricycle" to "trike". Shouldn't "motorcycle be shortened to "moke"? Using "bike" causes confusion. It leads people to ask "a bicycle or motorcycle?"

Because that's already in use as a name for a specific utility vehicle. Plus listening to enough context clues gives you an idea of which of the two is being talked about.

Huh, I've never even thought of that. I've never even heard tricycle referred to as trike. the only thing I have heard called trikes, are Triceratops.


Maybe as to not mix it up with Mokey (the Fraggle). :P

But what about mopeds? Should they be called mopes? :chin:
