Anyone hate the "nice guys finish last" saying?

This saying suggests that it is a bad thing for people to be nice and it discourages people from being nice.

I think it tends to be accurate in some cases. The saying doesn't bother me. At least nice guys get to finish.

Those lacking morals will do whatever it takes to achieve what they set out to do. Those that have a strong moral code won't. Nice guys finish last has truth behind it. It doesn't suggest being a nice guy is a bad thing, just that bad guys act unethically by using people to get what they want.

I hate the fact that it’s true.

It is a bad thing to compromise your self-interest for the sake of niceness, by definition. It only discourages people who can afford not to be nice from being nice. If you know the consequences of not being nice are that someone will beat the crap out of you, the costs of not being nice may outweigh those of being nice, which would mean you’re better off staying nice anyway. Only because you’re weaker than those who can instead be the ones beating the crap out of anyone who has a problem with their lack of niceness.

It’s bullcrap.

Nice people might lose some battles....but they’ll win the war in the end.

So are many nice people.

People who are dicks usually suffer greatly in the end. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

I have seen a lot of nice people do well. Denis Istomin is an example of that for me. He is not a well-known player like Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal (who I also like), but he scored an incredible victory by doing something that once seemed impossible-making the professional tennis tour after his recovery from a serious car accident.

I thought the nice guys won the war but lost their teeth.

The saying is true enough that the band Green Day did a song about it

Aren't the members of Green Day nice guys? They've earned millions of dollars being sort of nicely idealistic.

People are all unique and all individuals. For every nice guy, there is a nice woman, same as the opposite. Has nothing to do with finishing last. If a guy (or woman for that matter) purposefully acts like a jerk because he thinks he will be more popular and not finish last, he really needs to take a long good look in the mirror and self-reflect.

I never understood it. I like it when people are actually nice.

Yeah I get it, sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. But a lot of people are just cruel.
The world needs more nice people. I think they're on the verge of becoming an endangered species.

Why? Is it true success, when you must break all the rules and hurt everyone around you?
