I bailed on Hospice

I had been volunteering for Community Care Northumberland (CCN) Hospice for some time, but they hadn't used me for a while. They had another training day this week, but I bailed on that & helping them. The last training day I was at freaked me out. There were 50-60 people there, in a small, long rectangular room in a church basement. It was also very noisy. But the break at 10AM almost drove me out of there. Unfortunately, when more than a couple voices are heard, they seem to merge into an awful noise for me. I was driven batty when everyone was talking at the same time! Lunch was a bit better as only ½ were talking at the same time, the other ½ were eating!

I just couldn't bear going through that again.

Maybe I'll go back to CCN and volunteer to drive - long distance, not in town.

I can identify with your situation. Too many people, too much noise. I hope you can find something that works better for you. In the states we have literacy volunteers who teach reading one on one. Also Meals on Wheels volunteers drive and deliver food to elderly people in their homes.

I know that I wouldn't have been able to handle all that.

I don't blame you for reacting negatively to a situation like that. I'm still incredulous that most people's brains can automatically push such cacophony aside causing them no stress at all. It truly amazes me.

Not for nothing but how's hospice gonna be noisy when everyone there is basically dying??? I know that sounds kinda rude but if one can educate me, that would be nice. Indeed it can be annoying with a place is unnecessarily noisy.
