English people obsessed with Australia

Why are people from England so obsessed with emigrating too Australia when there are countries nearer that have hot tropical climates like Spain or Italy?

Australia is cool.

And hot.

Yet you wear a hoodie!

It's cool to be hot.

Australia is a beautiful and fascinating country and all, but there are so many dangerous plants and animals. I'm glad to be living in a country where I usually don't have to worry about venomous snakes, dangerous spiders or even trees that drop their branches and crush people without warning. I even read that those cute and soft-looking koalas carry chlamydia.

If I were a mermaid, I wouldn't want to live in the Great Barrier Reef, either. I once saw a really lame Netflix cartoon about a group of girls who turn into mermaids in Australia. Deadly venomous jellyfish, blue ring octopi, stingrays, barracudas... I'd rather deal with talking crabs and evil sea witches.

The nearer places are all crowded and filled up with people. Australia is still an underpopulated wild frontier type of place (like the US during the old west days). And unlike Spain or Greece they speak English.

And Coolangatta is the best beach in the world You lot even speak English (of a kind and have a way with words that is side splitting at times ("Jeez, it stands out like a dead rat on birthday cake!") And the sun... who wouldn't want to go to OZ? I haven't met the Wizard yet, maybe you get to do that on your 100th visit there...

Besides the common(ish) language, Australia also part of the Commonwealth, and seems to be perceived as being politically and socially a bit closer to Britain than, say, the USA (though I can't vouch for how accurate they are). Among the people I've known or their relatives, all the ones who emigrated "down under", or who would like to, have all preferred New Zealand to Australia.

They are very different countries, both with their own strengths and appeal. Aussies have a much funnier sense of humour, generally, IMO. They can laugh at themselves more readily than most nations.

I have lived in both countries, I like the big sky in Australia, the diversity of the environment, (rain forest, desert, mountains, fabulous coastlines, the beautiful clear sunny days there, the vibrant cities). I have experienced great kindness in Australia from complete strangers, and the fabulous birdlife never ceases to delight me.

New Zealand is cooller, more rainy (why it is so green), and more egalitarian in some ways, though both countries have the core ethos of a "fair go".

Both countries have very beautiful harbours, Sydney's is particularly impressive, as is Auckland's. To sail into Sydney Harbour on an ocean liner on a fine day is a very wonderful and unforgettable experience.

Yes, the more similar climate, environment, and landscape seem to be a big part of why many of the people I mentioned earlier preferred New Zealand to Australia.

Australia has a rich athletic history. A lot of good runners and tennis players have come from there. John Landy, the second man to break for minutes for the mile, is Australian, as is tennis player Rod Laver.

Your post made me curious about which country is the most successful international Olympic competitor on a per capita basis. I was expecting Australia to be top of the list or very near it. The results surprised me, and will probably surprise most people:

My only quibble with the analyses in these charts is that the proven record of cheating (steroids and so on) by athletes from the countries that made up the Soviet Union is not taken into account. They are still getting caught. New Zealand Olympian Valerie Adams was cheated out of a gold medal in the last Olympics by a Belarus cheat. Adams was subsequently awarded the Gold Medal when the cheating of the Belarus athlete was soundly proven.
