How is providing emotional support defined for an animal?

Me & my girlfriend are desperately wanting to move but we have a couple pets, a cat & a chinchilla. Some places say they don't allow pets, no exceptions. I did some quick research on Google & apartments are legally required to allow emotional support animals. The person has to have a disability, me & my girlfriend both have physical & mental 1s. & the animal has to perform some task/function that helps with a disability or condition & that can include providing emotional support. I'm wondering what is meant by providing emotional support. Can someone please explain this alittle bit to me.
