"I now pronounce you woman and husband. You may kiss the groom."

"All women are created equal."

"Always be polite and let the gentlemen go first."

"God created woman in her own image."

Works for me. I have no problem with it either way.

there's no reason "female" or "woman" needs to have more syllables than their XY counterparts.

That is just how the English language is. It goes the other way too. "Husband", "gentleman" and "widower" have more syllables than "wife", "lady" and "widow".

That's the very problem.

The word "goddess" is the word "god" with the suffix 'ess' on the end to make it female (implying that male is the assumed gender of a deity).

If language were 'female dominated' then "god" would be assumed to be female, and you would have to tack on a suffix to denote male. Like the 'er' ending on "widower".

Or if language were totally equal I suppose that it would be "the godders and goddesses on Mount Olympus" with both genders getting a suffix.

Gender equal language.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss each other."

"All people are created equal."

"Always be polite and give equal treatment to both genders. Neither gender goes first."

"God created people in their own image."

"Be kind to one another," works as well.

This is how I'd have preferred it. Equal and neutral.

I wouldn't want it so neutral that words like he and she becomes archaic though, and exchanged with a new word like the Swedish "hen".
