Why is the "my favorite things" from the Sound of Music commonly played with the Christmas songs in stores? It is not a Christmas song.

Maybe because it's about things & Christmas is about giving things.

What makes a song a Christmas song?
Technically Jingle bells isn't a Christmas song either.
There's nothing about Christmas or Santa or Jesus in it.
There's bells in it but bells aren't only a Christmas thing.
There's a one horse sleigh, not a magical sleigh pulled by reindeer.
There's snow but that just makes it a winter song.
The only thing that makes it a Christmas song is that it's played/sung at Christmas.

Well...jingle bells is about winter, and mentions snow, and snow banks, and combines winter with fun.

But yeah...never thought about that before, but you're right that it doesn't specifically mention Christmas.

In contrast Joni Mitchel's song "the River" actually mentions the word "Christmas", but is rarely thought of as a Christmas song.

Julie Andrews, who played Maria in the 1965 film version of the musical, sang the song on the Christmas special for The Garry Moore Show.

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass released a version in 1969 as a single from their 1968 album, Christmas Album. It reached No. 45 on the Billboard 100.

Lorrie Morgan's version appeared in 1994 and again in 1999 at No. 64 and No. 69, respectively, on the Hot Country Songs chart after she recorded it for her 1993 album, Merry Christmas from London

I don't understand why a certain network shows Beauty & The Beast every Christmas eve. it's NOT a Christmas movie & has nothing to do with the holidays.

Because Sound of Music is played on TV at Christmas time. And because it has packages tied up with string which pre-Amazon would be a Christmas or birthday thing. People didn't use to get parcels every day.
I love musicals at Christmas time. I wish they were on TV all the time, then I'd watch TV all the time instead of just at Christmas.

In addition to Christmas songs (or carols) often done in church, you have songs about winter, the usual love songs set at Christmas, and a few that reference families getting together then. And maybe, Santa give me my free stuff.

So basically, "My Favorite Things" is played at Christmas time because it is sentimental, schmaltzy, and loaded with winter-time references.
