What are your thoughts on odoriferous cheeses? Do you like to eat odoriferous cheeses? Do you like to smell them? Or not?

I'm thinking of blue veined cheeses such as Roquefort, Stilton, "Blue" cheese.

Also, in the U.S. there is a semi-soft aged cheese called Limburger that has been viewed as stereotypically smelly. It was featured in some comical scenes in the old TV show The Little Rascals if I recall correctly.

I actually like strong cheeses. Although I'm hypersensitive to sounds and to many smells, I will often enjoy intense flavors like spicy food and intense flavors.

How about you?

If a cheese smells like my socks, rot, or vomit, then I won't even touch it.

Scratch Limburger off of your list then. From what I understand certain molecules that contribute to its smell are also found on feet or at least some people's feet...... Incidentally, the root of the Valerian plant used as a homeopathic remedy also has, according to some, a smell of unwashed feet. It's funny because I don't regard Limburger or Valerian as having an offensive odor, but I find the smell of "swamp foot" on a person to be offensive.

You mentioned vomit smell. I don't like the smell of yogurt for that reason. An empty yogurt container left on the table giving off the occasional waft of sour milk vomit smell is unpleasant to me. It sours my mood.

I seem to periodically crave strong smelling/tasting foods. Thankfully those in my family don't take umbrage and I do warn them in advance and even ask permission of sorts before I consume such things.

Case in point: Occasionally I will buy Limburger and use it to make a sandwich consisting of bread, Limburger, slices of strong raw onion and Dijon mustard.

Another case in point: Occasionally I will make a puree of fresh raw garlic cloves, olive oil and lemon juice and eat liberal amounts of it on bread or crackers. Thankfully my wife participates as well. To "garlic out" is what we call it.

I love stinky cheese and blue cheese.

Every-so-often I like to make a big pot of brocolli and stilton soup.

I like camembert best when it is smells particularly ripe.

I never knew such a soup existed, hurtloam. I'm very intrigued by this! I can guarantee I would be the only one in my family to eat such a soup, but it sounds and looks interesting after a quick internet search.

Last week my friend bought me an Époisses cheese back from France and it was falling apart, quite tasty though. My favourite stinky cheese is Muenster Käse from Alcase.

i love most kinds of cheese, including the stinky ones.

The ones I don't like are the sweet platter cheeses with dried fruit in them, waaaay too bizarre for me.

One type of bacteria, brevibacterium, lives in between human toes, thrives in a damp, salty environment, and produces the cheese-like smell of feet.

brevibacterium is used in the creation of some cheeses

I used to joke about certain cheeses smelling like kitty poo. If you can get beyond that smell, they actually taste pretty good. Still, I like them only in very small doses.

Magna,

I can't stand warm milk for the same reason. It smells like vomit.

^^ Smelling like kitty poo. That's funny. I had a friend once and she referred to Parmesan cheese as "baby butt cheese".

I like Parmesean cheese on spaghetti, but I can't get past the stink of other strong-smelling cheeses.

Oh my, I just have to have "Parmigiano Reggiano" cheese grated onto my pasta. It is SO good!

The stinky cheese I love is 12 year old cheddar! First time I bought it, I tried it & loved it. Stuck it back in the fridge. Woke up next morning, reached for milk & thought something was definitely rotten in the fridge. Of course it was the 12 year old cheese!

I haven't seen it offered for a while, but I did pick up some 10 year old cheddar. Mmmm, mmmm good! It is nothing like the Kraft crap in the supermarket!

Come on by for coffee, maple syrup & cheese! What else can I add to the list? Oh ya, just made a couple Dark Fruit Cakes. One is being soaked in Brandy. Mmm, mmmm good!
