I have some leave saved up at work and if I use it from late April to early May, I can hit 4 public holidays (Good Friday, Easter Monday and two Australian holidays), and combined with weekends I can use 8 leave days to get 17 days off, which to me sounds pretty good. I haven't been on a proper holiday for about 6 years either, so I think it'd be pretty nice to go on one.

Problem is, nobody in my (relatively small) circle is also in a position where they can go on holiday, so if I go, I'd have to go alone, and that being the case I'm not sure what I'd do, or what that would look like. I'm not a people person so I don't expect it would be easy for me to cultivate connections with people whilst actually on holiday, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed and what I could do if I took that time off.

There's nothing wrong with holidaying alone. I booked a few days in Dublin alone as part of a holiday yesterday.

I don't see it as there being anything wrong with holidaying alone per se, but having never done so in the past and having never organised a holiday for myself, I guess I'm a little unsure as to how to go about it. What do people do on solo holidays?

I love the countryside and I love walking, so this is generally MY answer to your question, but of course what you should do on a solo holiday depends on your own character, interests and so forth. In Dublin, I intend to check out the museums, art gallery and literary and historical sites, among other things.

I've had quite a few holidays on my own. I went to Dublin, for example, and it's a great city for getting around. There are loads of things to see (if you like museums). I also did a three week road trip around the US once.
I have to admit that I rarely spoke to anyone except waiters, bartenders, hotel receptionists... but there was no point pretending to be gregarious when I'm not.
If I was going on a solo holiday now, I'd be tempted to do an activity holiday... quite fancy wine tasting or bread baking. I'd even consider a buddhist retreat.
I have tried one activity holiday... children's book illustration (which I was into at the time). It was led by Michael Foreman and it was a great week.
The main thing, if anyone asks "Are you going on a holiday on your own" with a pitying look in their eyes, say "You're damned right I am."

I had planned on visiting Paris for a week this summer, but I don't want to be there if the Gilet Jaune business is going to kick off. Maybe Avignon or Dordogne instead - or a walking holiday in the Auvergne 8)
