In the distant past, the winters would become so cold (-40 degrees F) that the birds in the sky would become incapacitated. Individuals would brave the cold and pick them up with their hands.
You can get small stickers to put on windows to avoid bird strikes. They are the shape of a bird of prey, the birds instinctively avoid them. You don't really want to plaster them over all of your windows, but if you have one large window which is prone to bird strikes it might be worth trying. I believe it's mostly juvenile birds that are likely to hit your windows.
