"Past Performance Is No Guarantee of Future Results" -- true or false? Maybe somewhere in between?

Example: A coin is tossed 9 times. Each time, it comes up "Heads". Will the next toss also come up "Heads"?

Example: A batter strikes out twice in the same game. Will he strike out during his next at-bat?

Example: A man asks 99 women for a date and is turned down each time. Will he be turned down on his 100th try?

Chances are that the coin could turn up tails on the 10th turn. Chances are that the batter could end up hitting a home run. Chances are that man could get a date the 100th time. He could get a date because he's crafted his method to a science.

First is actually random (call it luck if you will), the second two involve more factors and at least some of those one can actually influence and even control...

But pattern recognition
