The story about people on the spectrum having less empathy than the general populace is such a big lie. I'm a very emotional person and can't easily hide it. I reckon we tend to have more empathy than most. Not all of us of course, but a good deal.
I think it's true in general about us. We tend to have problems expressing empathy due to our awkwardness, straightforwardness, & shyness/anxiety. We also may not fully understand the situations & we may see very obvious logical solutions that others are ignoring/avoiding. We try to help by offering advice & we come off as insensitive when we're doing our best to be supportive. However there are
some autistics who are very callus usually as a result of them being very misunderstood & mistreated in life. If you keep getting screwed over by others you may start to think of people in general as being bad & maybe you even become misanthropic &/or an a$$hole. It's kinda like a form of self-protection in a way. That happened with me after my 1st realtionship fell apart & I fell into a bad depression. Getting over the depression & having good experiences with others made me come around.
I try to make my life worth living by supporting my girlfriend as best I can. I want to feel useful & like she's a better person with me in her life. I've been failing miserably lately but that's cuz of life problems stressing us out & she needs more support than she used to.
