Benjamin Franklin was our first Postmaster. The United States Postal Service traces its roots to 1775 during the Second Continental Congress, when Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first postmaster general. So yesterday (July 26) was the 244th birthday of the US Postal Service. In the very early days mail was sent from one post office to another and you had to periodically visit the post office in order to send or pick up your mail. Home delivery of our mail began during the civil war to inform families of the deaths of their soldier sons rather than receiving the news at the town post office where their grief would be on public display.

When I was in my first year of college, I worked in the post office and I enjoyed the experience.

I worked in sorting mail at the main sorting facilities and also door-to-door delivery of mail.

Generally I thought door-to-door delivery was good because you are out on your own (independent and not having someone constantly looking over your shoulders), walking down quiet streets, and very good exercise. As it turned out I was quite good at it. This might be a good job for an Aspie. There were only two negatives. Sometimes I encountered dogs and some were a little on the vicious side. Also because I was so good at it they assigned me the task of delivering certified letters, which were summons to appear in court. They were restricted delivery, return receipt requested. Restricted delivery means that only the person addressed in the summons to can sign for it. Therefore you sometimes cross paths with some seedy individuals and had to have them sign their own summons.

How much longer can snail mail be viable?

Post office would be as good of a job as I qualify for. No drama. Inside. Not hot, cold, dirty like a restaurant. Not too many angry customers. Not as intellectually challenging as desired but "beggars can't be choosers". Back office


Mailman, not a good job for me. Even though it is alone. Driving. Rain, snow. Dogs.

^ The nearest post office branch to me stinks and is too bright. It stinks because the delivery trucks are parked inside the same building as the sorting is done. It stinks like exhaust all the time. I would hate it there. Other branches don't stink so maybe it's just that one that would be bad. I would hate working the front at any branch and dealing with a continuous stream of people. It's good there are people suited for the work. One of the desk people is so nice; he is genuinely helpful and really seems to like his job.

i wish to heaven i coulda passed that daggone memory test to get hired.

There's one guy at the post-office I go to who fits that description. He really tries & has a good attitude. I've had some problems with the post-office thou but it's with the main branch that delivers the mail which is a different one than I go to. They've left packages by our door before which is close to the sidewalk & sometimes if we weren't around or were sleeping, the packages would get jacked. There also was a time when the packages would just get left out in our mail room area where anyone could take em & some got jacked that way too. We've always had parcel lockers but the post-office wasn't using them when we 1st moved here. They started using them after we've complained about packages getting stolen but they've had phases where they leave things at the door or would just leave us delivery slips so we could pick up the packages at the good post office. They've been a couple times when the good post-office didn't have the packages they should of. I suspect the post office that delivers didn't give the packages to them. The nice guy at the post-office tried his best to find em & called the main branch. A couple times the packages turned up later on but one time it didn't. Thankfully everything that disappeared was ordered from Amazon so we were able to get them reshipped or get our money back & then reorder it. It's kinda a hassle with Amazon but not really their fault. We always try to make sure me or my girlfriend would be up & waiting around when we have packages coming just incase the post-office leaves them by our door even thou that hasn't happened for a while. Trump is trying to cut off the post-office funding or privatize it so we're worried things may get a lot worse. Maybe FedEx or UPS will take over the mail service & FedEx will always just leave the packages by our door if the signature isn't required & UPS will occasionally just leave them too.
