If you're deaf can you hear yourself speak ?

Most people who are hard of hearing aren't 100% deaf, so maybe they can hear themselves a little bit. But when they do speak they don't sound like people who aren't deaf, which is one of the reasons they use sign language.

If a person is profoundly hard-of-hearing from birth, it would be very difficult to acquire functional verbal speech.

It’s a little different with a merely severely hard-of-hearing, it’s more likely the person will develop functional speech.

The reason I asked: The other day I had difficulty hearing my stepdaughter while on the phone. I thought it might be m either my volume control or her phone. My volume control was set to high.
This is going to sound silly , but got I the idea to cover my left and then right ear. My hearing is dulled when covering my right ear. I can hear myself speak ok when trying it,just noticeably dulled in the left ear.

My stepdaughter has made an appointment for me to see the doctor or nurse tomorrow(not sure which) to check if it's an infection or anything else. She was told they no longer syringe ears. I guess it's now regarded as bad practice.

I recently lost some hearing in my left ear which I discovered in a similar way - initially, I thought my earphones broke. Normally, your other ear compensates so it takes a while to become aware.

Go to the doctor, did you have any other symptoms? Pain, dizziness?

Occasional ,very mild pain. A hard to describe(ocean sound?), low pitch noise in my left ear.

Definitely check that out and have your doctor send you to a specialist for an audiogram. Even if the hear loss is mild, you'll want to keep an eye on it and have a history of the progression.

^ It's a 'sudden' rather than 'slowly occurring over time' thing .

To answer your question: my guess is "yes"- deaf folks hear themselves use their own voices because we all hear our own voices resonating through our own skulls. And that's why our voices sound different to us on recording devices then our voices sound when we speak.

But yeah...get your hearing checked out by a doctor.

That was my point (btw it happened the same way to me) - they need to identify why it happened and you need to have it on the record how many decibels you've lost in case something similar happens again.

I've been playing some Youtube music videos. It's easier to make out the words in some than others. Even with the clearer ones there's a variability in making out individual words .

Good news. Both ears were checked. There's a build up of wax in the left ear. The solution? Olive oil. May take a week or two , with the hearing perhaps getting worse before it gets better .

I remember in a movie the first thing a character noticed when he suddenly went deaf is that he could not hear the sound of his own voice.

I left out the title to avoid a spoiler.

Here is the clip:

It's a lot trickier when you lose just a bit of hearing - I was fuming over my new earphones going to s**t so soon...
