It's not so uncommon these days for parents to say "shut up" to their kids or teachers to say "shut up" to their students.

In my experience, it has been this way since the early 1960s.

Yikes, I'd never say that to my kids, and I never said it to kids when I was teaching. That's totally inappropriate.

I don't remember my own parents ever said that to me. And heaven forbid if I ever said it to them.

When I was a kid, telling anyone to shut up was very rude and nasty. But people are ruder than ever these days, or so I've heard.

No, I don't think it's normal or acceptable to say that and I don't remember hearing it as a child. I recall it was considered a curse word at school (1970s onward).

The acronym STFU happens online between adults but not in normal conversation.

My mom said this a lot when I was growing up.

It seems to me that the people who say Shut Up are the 1s who are making the most noise. We hear our neighbor yelling Shut Up You Little B!tch to his 10 year-old daughter a lot or he's yelling other similar things at her  He's the one who needs to shut the hell up. My cousin & her mom(my aunt) used to yell Shut Up very loudly at my cousin's kids & they made more noise than the kids. I really hate how people project onto others & are f#cking hypocrites.

Have you reported this to the police or children's services?

I wouldn't tolerate that or let it continue. You can report anonymously, I'm sure.

That's creepy. Saying "shut up" to your kids is bad enough. This is just unacceptable.

I'd rather be told to shut up in those words than be "sshh". I feel uncomfortable when people go sshh to me. I know it is more acceptable than saying shut up, but I'm only speaking for myself here.
I even cringe when someone says sshh to someone else, even though it doesn't affect others the way it does me. One time I was walking into a public bathroom with some other people, and there was a terrible smell in there. One of the people I was with was laughing and yelling, "phrawww! That reeks!" and the other person we were with said, "sssshhhh!" because it was a public place. I cringed when she sshh'd, even though it wasn't me who was being loud and silly about it and she didn't sshh me. But I still cringed as though I had been sshh'd. But I wouldn't have cringed if she had jokingly whispered, "shut up!"

I find that hard to believe.

Saying "Shutup" to an adolescent these days is likely to get you attacked.
Many teach live in fear of their students.
Discipline in any form in schools these days is in the decline in western societies, at least.

“Shut up” is mild, considering my parents would yell “Shut the hell up, or I’ll shut you up. (Meaning if you keep tapping your flap, yer gonna get the living sh!t knocked out of you!)

We haven't reported it. We're pretty sure he'll know it's us cuz he only has one other neighbor that could hear that when they're inside & they may be friends. He probably yells that cr@p in public too but he'll still probably know it's us cuz we complained to management before about his bass being too loud.
He probably does love his daughter & is doing the best he can as a single parent but he has anger issues. I never had a great relationship with my parents & we cursed each other out LOTS of times.

She's 10. And she's probably endured this for a long time. It's more than just cursing at each other, he's outright abusing her. I've been a single parent before and yes, it's hard, but there are absolutely no excuses for his behavior. If you don't report this I'll find a way to.

Here are two links for reporting the father's abusive behaviour. If you are intimidated by him Nick, just imagine how his ten year old dependent daughter must feel. She needs help. It's your duty as a concerned adult to act on her behalf. Children's Services personnel know how to intervene and protect your anonymity.

Please help this child. You have no idea what else might be going on in that home.
