What does clickbait mean? Something to do with fishing?

Yes, it's a fishing bait making clicking noises to attract mousefish.

Not heard of mousefish. Is that a Polish translation?

Mousefish attract catfish.
Catfish attract dogfish.

Clickbait is what you use to attract "mouse fish"- the mouse fishes in turn pull in...the SUCKER fish.

The sucker fish 'clicks" the mouse fish and both get reeled in...reeled in by the internet advertiser!

Exactly, mousefish are the main species hunted by catfish.

In other words:

Something needlessly provocative: like a thread on an autistic support website with a title like "None of You are Real Autistics" that draws lotsa sudden attention ...is an example of "click bait".

Oh, I see what @Ezra did there!! !! !! (Thanks for the assist, @naturalplastic.) That's funny. In my defense I often open so many tabs, I lose sight of the subject lines.

I would never post on a thread that is obvious click bait.

Uhmm. A bit like deceptive TV adverts like internet providers who use fluffy kittens to advertize, or a soft drink company using dancing red people. None of these have ANYTHING WHATSOEVER to do with their products.

Basically that.

When I go to "Explorer" (to get here to WP for example) the start up page is chock full of click bait of the worst kind.

You see some headline about some topic that mildly interests you like "these celeb couples have huge age differences between them" that shows a pic of a fav star of yours, and their spouse. So ofcourse you click it. And then you get ONE paragraph on the topic, instead of a body of copy. And you see an arrow that says "continue the slide show". So you hafta manually advance it page by page just so you can read the story one paragraph at a time. Meanwhile you get exposed to a dozen pages chocked full of adverts. And its designed to trip you. So by mistake you click the wrong arrow- and it links you TO one the ads that you're not interested in..Grrrrr..

I didn't even know there was a term for it. But then I saw folks use the term "click bait" here on WP, and ...I immediatly got what the term meant (boy do I EVER know what "click bait" is!).
