There was an interesting article this morning about people refusing vaccinations (anti-vaxxer).

While the Germans' no-nonsense approach to life can be irritating to some, it also has some very notable benefits. They will no longer tolerate parents who refuse to give the measles vaccine to their children.

While Germans' no-nonsense approach to life can be irritating, it also has some very notable benefits. The trains run on time. (Well, they used to, anyway.) Their export products, particularly cars, are nice and well-built. They have zero tolerance for Holocaust denial, which is actually a crime in their country. (They gave an 89-year-old woman a 14-month prison sentence for it.)

And now, Germany will fine parents who refuse to vaccinate their children against measles. According to the New York Times, the fine could be as high as €2,500.

Just like Americans, Germans are concerned about infringing on individual rights. In anticipation of this, the article quoted Germany's health minister Jens Spahn, who said, "My understanding of freedom does not stop at my level as an individual... It is also a question of whether I am unnecessarily putting others at risk."

It seems that the U.S. is slowly going in Germany's direction. California just passed an incredibly strict vaccination law that targets doctors suspected of handing out exemptions like candy. This year, New York City fined three people $1,000 each for refusing a measles vaccine. In 2017, a Michigan woman went to jail for five days for refusing to vaccinate her son.

Nobody wants this outcome. But a person who refuses vaccines is a clear and present danger to public health and safety. We should expect more crackdowns until anti-vaxxers wise up.

Does this mean that one person's freedom ends where another person's need begins?

Are we destined to become slaves to each other's needs?

What is the difference between a 'need' and a 'want'?

My youngest brother has it on paper that he has had his vaccines, but the truth is, he only had the first injection out of three, as he nearly died. His eyes rolled back in his head and he was like this for about 10 days, almost unresponsive to the outside world. It was a reaction to the atripine in the injection. Atrapine is made from deadly nightshade.
The doctor panicked. There was only a yes or no to put down on the records. He put yes to stop him having it again should another doctor try to give it to him. The other injections would have killed him had he have had those as well.
Due to this though he has been abroad to various countries right around the world, but has never had any injections.

Atropine sulfate by syringe injection is normally used to treat:
* excessive saliva production
* reversal of nerve function blockage that affects muscle
* overdose of organophosphorous agent
* sinus bradycardia
* toxic amount of muscarine in the body
* poisoning caused by anticholinesterase medication
* additional agent to induce general anesthesia
* additional x-rays of the stomach or intestines

I don't see any relationship between atropine and vaccines. It would seem very strange to include atropine in any vaccine such as the measles vaccine.

In childhood, meaningless speech, lethargy, coma and absence of tachycardia are the ominous signs in deadly nightshade intoxication. Cases of deadly nightshade intoxication may also be confused with post-traumatic brain damage, and acute psychosis.

Atropa Belladona is a poisonous plant called deadly nightshade. It's a plant classified in the solanaceae family and its roots, leaves and fruits contain the belladonna alkaloids: atropine, hyocyamine, and scopolamine. Atropa Belladona is a perennial bushy herb taxonomically classified in the family solanaceae, it can grow up to five feet tall and is usually found in quarries and waste ground. It's a rare plant and dangerous: the ingestion of 10 bays would be toxic to an adult, 2-3 for a child. The risk of poisoning in children is important because of possible confusion with other berries (blackcurrant, blueberry).

I wonder if there is more to this story. Perhaps he ate some nightshade berries, displayed the symptoms you described, was rushed to the hospital where he almost died.

Perhaps someone else on this board might enlighten me if atropine was ever used within the injections of childhood vaccines!

I don't see anything about the use of atropine in vaccines.

In reality, if we stop using vaccines, we will have pandemics of diseases which were long thought to be eradicated.

The doctor said that it was an elergict reaction to the atropine present in the injections and on no account that he should come into contact with it.

It was a. MMR vaccine he had which came as three injections.

As far as I can determine the MMR Vaccine (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) does not contain atropine.

Only going by what the drs told us. If it wasn't atropene, what was it that caused the reaction?

I am not trying to say that they didn't inject your brother with atropine. But I don't think it was associated with an immunization shot.

Atropine might have been administered to control seizures. These seizures might have originated from an injury to the brain or even epilepsy. {Compared with the general population, the increased prevalence of epilepsy in people with autism and the increased prevalence of autism in epilepsy are now well established.]

It is sometimes administered with anesthesia.

It was used to treat obsessive and hysterical hypochondria and schizophrenia by inducing a atropine coma.

So I am only guessing but perhaps the doctors administered atropine to your brother to induce a controlled coma. As you said "His eyes rolled back in his head and he was like this for about 10 days, almost unresponsive to the outside world."

I think that Germany is doing a very good thing as far as child vaccinations are concerned and I think that America is being very wise by following suit. I think that all parents should be made to vaccinate their children.

You may have mis-heard or mis-remembered what the doctors said.  Atropine is sometimes used to resuscitate people who have gone into cardiac arrest.  It was likely administered to your brother to save his life after a near-fatal allergic reaction (such as anaphylactic shock) to something in a previous injection.  If you have access to your brother's medical records, you may find that this is the case.

Atropine has been replaced by epinephrine.

Mum said it was to try to correct one of his eyes. As he had such an allergict rection, they did not want to risk giving him the MMR vaccine, so they put him down as he had had it, when he had not had it.

Amblyopia ("Lazy Eye") sometimes responds to atropine treatment, so that could very well be the case.

As a young man, I remember reading a book titled "1984" written by George Orwell. It described a world formed through government over-reach, which produced a repressive regimentation of all persons and behaviours within society. It was a world where everyones actions were controlled by the government. Even their thought were censored and subject to reindoctrination (brainwashing) if evidence was uncovered that they erred and went against the party line.

Some of these elements are present in society today. So it is interesting to pull back the curtain and see this in operation. But in our present world many times the ones who pull the strings are lobbyist or special interest groups.

Social media sites like Facebook offer advertisers an easy and inexpensive channel to reach narrowly-defined audiences in a relatively unregulated setting. A group analyzed the possible role of Facebook, in a national health care issue: the need for vaccinations.

Source: Vaccine-related advertising in the Facebook Ad Archive Vaccine DOI: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2019.10.066

The study is based on Facebook's Ad Library, "a searchable repository," of ads of national importance, part of Facebook's response to the constant drumbeat of high-level criticism. While it doesn't tell us how individuals interacted with the ads, it may offer some insights. It will not tell us how their proprietary algorithms work, but if revenue is a measure, their micro-targeted advertising works very well, to the tune of $55 billion in 2018.

The Ad Library was searched for ads for "vaccines," and data on the dates the ads ran, their titles, and the source paying for the ads was identified. Ad performance was quantified as a blend of advertisement cost along with the exposure and client engagement. As Facebook's efforts to monitor these types of ads are continually evolving, the data within the set changes over time.

With data in hand, each ad was identified by two of the authors, as pro, anti-vaccine, or irrelevant; the majority of times, when there was disagreement over the focus of the ad, it was adjudged irrelevant. The authors also sought to define significant themes within the ads. Two searches yield 505 ads, of which 309 were considered relevant – 53% pro and 47% anti.

The findings:

* 90% of the ad buys cost less than $500.
* 75% of all these ads targeted "a majority (or entirely) female audience." [This is in keeping with the acknowledged role of women as the gatekeepers of healthcare for their families.] The audience age for the anti-vaccine ads was more concentrated on "young adults most likely to have small children."

* Pro-vaccine promotional messaging accounted for half of the ads.
* About half focused on a specific vaccine (e.g., flu) or geographic area, and was paid for by a local health care organization.
* More general ads regarding global vaccine policy accounted for an additional 24% of advertising.
* 83 buyers supported pro-vaccine messages. While roughly 40% of the total was from the Gates Foundation or Walmart, pro-vaccine ads had many sources.

* Anti-vaccine messaging described harms (49%), promoted parental choice (30%), or suggested fraud/corruption (18%). No vaccine was specified, and appeals were frequently personalized with parents describing an injury to their children.
* 27 buyers supported anti-vaccine messages, 54% of the total were purchased by two groups, the World Mercury Project and Stop Mandatory Vaccines. Overall, compared to pro-vaccine advertisements, "buys" were concentrated in a few purchasers.

In Facebook's town square, you can speak if you have a name. But as the researchers point out, a name can be misleading. Is the National Vaccine Information Center pro or anti-vaccine, or it is merely a fair witness. While the National Vaccine Information Center may sound vaguely federal, it is "a non-profit advocacy group opposed to vaccination with a long history of controversial lobbying."

The town square of social media masks identity, and even if you want to respond, it is asynchronous, resulting in competing monologues more than dialogue. And the algorithms make it so difficult to walk away; they just keep serving up the same content over and over again.
