Railways aee logical. They have set patterns. They function following set rules and proceedures. Just model railways requires many different skills from carpentry to electronics. From historical research to photography. Many skills to learn. Soldering, painting, kit building, scratch building etc. The list goes on and on.
Model railways are a hobby which I have had since I have been a toddler onwards and I am now in my 40's and still have not outgrown the hobby as there are so many aspects to it that I could follow if I chose to do so. It is one of those hobbies where there is almost no end to the depths one can explore.
I do personally give a common sense warning. It is addictive and can be costly if one does not selectively choose what one wants to take out of the hobby.
About a decade or so ago, I found myself without an income and yet I did not want to stagnate in regards to the hobby. A change of scale brought me into an easier size to scratch and kitbuild to a tight budget. Scratchbuilding using simple techniques ensures I can keep modelling without spending too much money.
However, for children and even adults, there are some excellent battery operated trainsets which may lack a little detail, but are very cheap. I bought a set a few months ago for the same price as a single 00 (H0) gauge waggon would cost me. (I model in British 7mm narrow gauge).
Real railways can be seen and enjoyed. Locomotive numbers can be collected. (Railways can be dangerous so ensure to do this at a safe distance).
