Are you scared of fire alarms and smoke detectors? Were you scared of the fire alarm going off when you went to school? Did you ever think fire alarms and smoke detectors looked intimidating? I was terrified of the loud sound of the fire alarm going off when I was in school.

The sound I'm mostly ok with. I'm fine with those that sound like ringing bells.

I've always had a problem with the electronic ones that, in the best way I can describe, sound like air raid sirens from the war. Despite never having experienced war, and to be honest not knowing that much about how it would feel, I get a horrible sense of foreboding from those electronic alarms - I feel like I'm in a dark shelter with bombs going off around me. The alarms in university accommodation sounded like that, and waking up in a totally dark room to that sound from an alarm right above my head could be absolutely terrifying.

The sound is annoying, but I'm not afraid of it.

However, I've been afraid of the sound of fire trucks ever since I was little.

I guess I wouldn't want to touch a fire alarm or smoke detector though; they look kind of intimidating somehow.

I was never really afraid thou i hated the sound of them going off. My girlfriend has a fear of the sound going off & she covers her ears when they go off.

As a kid, the preschool I attended was in a large building, had a deafening loud fire alarm, I would became paranoid of it going off. Smoke detectors can be annoying too.

I really don't like them, but I'm not afraid of them when they're not going off. The ones they have at my school are so painfully loud that I do get a big spike of anxiety when they go off, no matter how quickly I jam my hands over my ears. One time I was standing right beneath one when it went off and it felt like getting an electric shock. I am definitely not a fan, though I appreciate fire safety.

I am easily startled, especially by loud and/or sudden noises. I am not scared of fire alarms unless they turn on, I hate fire drills. First I am interrupted from what I was doing and scared out of my socks by the alarm, then I have to walk past the alarms in a large crowd of people talking, then I have to stand in the bright outdoors in a still quite talkative crowd, and then I return to class with said crowd and attempt to pick up where I left off. As for smoke detectors, the only experience I have had with them is when they start beeping for no reason and I have to try not to go insane while everyone figures out why they are doing that (after confirming that the house is not fire of course).

We had a problem with the 1s in our apartment beeping. They quit beeping 1ce I took the battery out which is weird because the battery was only a backup incase the power went out. We had 4 that started beeping & they all started beeping at different times. One was beeping thou because the battery compartment wasn't locking closed & it stopped beeping 1ce I put tape on it. We had an inspection the couple smoke alarms that were tested didn't go off; they tested the broken 1s but the one with the battery compartment not locking wasn't tested. They put in an order to replace em & the new 1s have fine so far. They said something about ionization with the 1s that weren't working that I didn't understand.

Yes, quite often I wonder why the damn things have to be soo loud. The reasons are clear but sensory distaste is remembered as something very vivid in my minds eye. I hated the fire alarm at school/police sirens.
A neighbours boy constantly makes the noise of one, and he's getting on for eight. Must be ADHD. Poor family.

I'm not afraid of them, but it is annoying when my dad tests the smoke alarms and there's a loud beeping.

Yeah. Tomorrow at work there's fire training going on, and when they do fire training they test the alarms when unexpected. I'm not put down to do fire training, so I just have to do my work, but I'm going to be anticipating when the alarms are going to be going off.

Nobody at work likes the noise of the smoke alarms, they all say it's loud and hurts their ears (although covering your ears seems to be socially unacceptable in this society), but I believe the difference is probably nobody else is worrying about it right now at this moment and only complains when it happens, whereas I'm worrying about it way beforehand, which makes me jump worse when it does go off.

I hated bells when I was at school. Those ugly-looking electric things that were fixed to the walls and still worked during power cuts. It was so hard to avoid being near a bell without looking really autistic. There were two ways to avoid being too near a bell when it was due to ring; holding your hands over your ears until it rang, or isolating yourself from the rest of your friends in the hallways. Then when you told people that you were just unhappy about the bell, they did not understand at all. In fact they thought it was a joke. Kids at school were so hyperfocused on each other, that they didn't have time to worry or anticipate a bell ringing, whereas that was my worst anxiety during school life. :(

No.
Not afraid of the sight of smoke detectors and fire alarms. Nor can I understand why anyone would be afraid of them (sorry for my lack of empathy on that).

Not "afraid" of their sounds either. Am annoyed by their sounds, but their sounds are supposed to be annoying. So I am okay with it.

I'm not afraid of them, but I hate the noises they make. They always gave me a headache in school.

I am afraid of them in that they scare me when they go off, but I don't get scared when I see one on the wall.

People on WP sure ask this question a lot. No, I'm not afraid of them. I find them annoying when they go off (constantly) while a meal is being cooked but there's nothing burning, it's really the heat and not smoke that sets them off, but I'm not afraid of them.

Anyway, isn't it fire we should really be afraid of? :)

It's OK, nobody understands me when I say I am afraid of bells. I try to explain to people that how I see a bell is the same as how I (and most other people) would see a spider, but I still don't get any understanding.
