The Call of the Wild
One of my special interest is watching films. Since about 1980, I have watched a little over 2,360 films at the cinema, or on VCR tapes, Capacitance Electonic Discs (CEDs), Laser Disc, or on various formats of DVD’s. It is one of the ways I learn and experience life through the other people’s eyes. It relaxes me and gives me pleasure. I generally go to the multiplex movie theater during a matinee when the prices are somewhat reasonable. Most times in my local theater, very few people are present during the matinee showings. Sometimes I am the only one. This week I went to see The Call of the Wild. I was surprised that the theater was almost completely full. The movie is a good movie and I give it a thumbs up. It is a movie almost from a dog's perspective and much of the movie takes place in Alaska. The movie has Harrison Ford as one of the main actors and I like Harrison Ford. The movie has a lot of digital magic. I think most of the dogs/wolves/bears in the movie are computer generated photo realistic animations. They also do something weird, they give the animals expressions and in some cases they are human expressions.
I live in the country and I have a free range dog. I let him run free, run wild. He is a big dog around 100 pounds and is a Golden Retriever. But he is a little different than most Golden Retrievers in that Rocky is red. and looks like an Irish Setter. He has a couple characteristics that I have never seen in a dog before. Ever since he was a puppy, he had an unusual way of greeting people. He would find an object such as a stick or bone and put it into his mouth when he went to greet a human. It was like he was saying "Come pet me, you can pet me, see I am not dangerous, I have a stick in my mouth and I will not bite you." The other trait is that whenever I went for a walk the dog instinctively took on the role of a guard dog. He would walk about 50 paces in front of me and then stop and span the horizon for any signs of danger. If some form of danger materializes, such as a squirrel, he would immediately give chase. Otherwise he would wait until I caught up with him and then run another 50 paces in front of me.
He is a little like the dog in this movie, a bit of a wild dog.
