Let's try getting beyond "Aloha Snack Bar" and MEMRI TV for a moment; this thread is for discussing Muslims in general from around the world...

1. A good number of Muslims are rebelling against government officials that are critical of soft sciences and the humanities (LINK).
2. Some of them have embraced the straight edge movement (LINK).
3. There are so many gamers in the Middle East that at least one Islamic government is okay with video games (LINK).
4. The Korean Wave seems to have impacted the MENA region; Korean dramas are pretty popular there (LINK).
5. Ed Glaser of Neon Harbor once made a video about the turning point for modern Turkish horror films (LINK).
6. There is a group of furry Muslims on the internet (LINK).

One more thing: there seems to be a good number of Muslims who are vegetarians or vegans (LINK).

I used to be friends with a guy who was muslim and from Kuwait. I really liked him at first, but it really bothered me that he hated Jewish people so much (and American women and homosexuals). When he told me that he felt that the Jewish deserved everything that happened to them during the holocaust I could no longer be friends with him. My half sibilings have German Jewish ancestry on their grandmother's side of the family and I'm sorry but I found that VERY offensive and hurtful.

I don't have anything against Muslims but nobody will ever tell me that my brothers and sister and my nana all deserve to be killed by Nazis because of their ancestry. f**k that! :x

Another thing I noticed recently is how much some modern-day Muslims love chess (PROOF).

Four more things...

- Some Muslims are really interested in preserving the environment (CLICK).
- Soccer is a fairly popular sport for Muslims (HERE).
- The works of William Shakespeare are quite popular in Muslim-majority countries (FOR).
- Lastly, a couple of comic book characters are Muslims because they were created by some geeky Muslims (PROOF).

[sarcasm]

You all mean to say that Muslims are actually PEOPLE?!

I am shocked!

Shocked, I say!

[/sarcasm]

 Of course they're people -- always have been, and always will be!

Many Muslim teenage girls I see on the bus, though wearing hijabs, wear makeup.

Chess as we know it was invented in middle ages Iran. Our term "checkmate" is actually a corruption of the Iranian term "shah mat" meaning "the king is dead".

If only Ben Laden had become a "Furry".

Who knows? He might never have gotten involved with terrorism. :(

None of those things in particular would seem to go against their faith, from what I've read of the Koran and Islamic traditions. Monotheistic faiths are strict (I'm Christian), but we don't prohibit everything offered by secular culture. Now if they were eating pork en masse, or embracing religious universalism rather than Allah, or allowing the women to show lots of skin, then that would be something different, and you'd see reaction from the Muslim community.

I was mildly surprised to learn that Israeli pop singers are often quite popular among young people in the neighboring Arab countries.

Like this singer: the late Ms. Ofra Haza, who does pop versions of music based traditional Yemeni Jewish folk music. Surprising, but not surprising because her music is very Arab sounding.

But what really surprised me was learning that THIS later Israeli Eurovision winner also has a fallowing among Arab youth. Dani International is what she calls herself. She is a transgender person born male. If Arab youth can dig the Israeli Rupaul then....there is hope for world peace yet! :)

Her song "Kaddish" was one of my favorites.

Sadly, she died because her husband was too "macho" to admit that he had passed along the AIDS virus from one of his male "mistresses" to her.

Ofra Haza was a beautiful, gifted, unique artist....her life was fascinating and tragic.

Her music will always live on.

Yes. The OP is being kinda inane and silly. Chess was borrowed by the Christian West from Islamic Iran (so being surprised that Muslims are into chess is like being surprised that folks in England 'talk in the American langwidge'). The rest of the stuff is not particularly anti scripture in either the Koran, or the Bible. Why wouldn't Muslims become vegan furries who listen to K Pop?

Although some Muslims claim that the Quran justifies the theory of evolution, other Muslims aren't too comfortable with that scientific concept.

And yet, some internet searching reveals that some Muslim fundies prohibit chess, on the grounds that it is somehow too much like gambling and ultimately takes time away from living a strictly Quranic life.
