Nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day.

An additional 20-50 million are injured or disabled.

More than half of all road traffic deaths occur among young adults ages 15-44.

Road traffic crashes rank as the 9th leading cause of death and account for 2.2% of all deaths globally.

Road crashes are the leading cause of death among young people ages 15-29, and the second leading cause of death worldwide among young people ages 5-14.

Each year nearly 400,000 people under 25 die on the world’s roads, on average over 1,000 a day.
Over 90% of all road fatalities occur in low and middle-income countries, which have less than half of the world’s vehicles.

Road crashes cost USD $518 billion globally, costing individual countries from 1-2% of their annual GDP.

Road crashes cost low and middle-income countries USD $65 billion annually, exceeding the total amount received in developmental assistance.

Unless action is taken, road traffic injuries are predicted to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030.

3,287 deaths per day. Why aren't people panicking over this?

^ Well I’m definitely more scared of crossing the road than am of covid-19.

Some idiot put humans, humans I tell thee, in charge of speeding hard metal boxes.

Last time I checked I was soft and squashable and breakable.

I think we should find that disgusting reprobate and bring him to justice.

Are there mosquitoes there?

The World Health Organization estimates that between 300 and 500 million cases of malaria occur each year -- and a child dies from malaria every 30 seconds. And then there is West Nile virus.

in general people seem to be more accepting of high risk when they are in charge, such as with driving as opposed to being exposed to a virus. also it's a part of daily life for many millions.

but yeah i'll be sure to wash my hands and not touch my face

Fear is irrational.

Lots of people are passengers. Even if backseat drivers think they are in charge they're not. But that is the thing. There is nothing new about road crashes or the flu or disease carrying mosquitoes etc. Covid-19 is scary because it is new. You can not look back on it yet.

Washing hands and not touching face is the same as buckling up. You do it to play it safe, be responsible and have some peace of mind.

As for touching the face, I think that is perfectly safe as long as your hands are clean. It is only when your hands might be contaminated that it is unsafe. As it always has been. That's probably how people get "pink eye". They rub their eyes with germy unwashed fingers.

I yellow wasp (or hornet, or whatever it is) that we have here in the eastern half of the USA. Joins forces with black wasps, and bees, and mosquitos, to sting you in the summer.

The fear isn't totally irrational. While there are many auto accidents, the incidence has been consistently low over a very long time, so auto accidents aren't likely to overwhelm our health system. Or, put another way, we have enough infrastructure to deal with 5000 auto accidents a day, more or less evenly spread out over the USA.

But, if everyone got sick at once, routine assistance like oxygen tanks wouldn't be available to all who need it.

If there were 5000 auto accidents in one city in one day, would assistance be available to all who need it?

They get really nasty in the fall and try to take any beverage or food over.I got stung on the lip from one in a drink, had to use my epipen ,go to the doctor and get steroid shots. My head swelled up like a basketball. If they get in an alcoholic beverage they turn into a mean drunk and attack. They nest in the ground and heaven help you if you run over one with the lawn mower.
