I'm in the U.S. and I remember either watching French news or BBC - not sure which one - about maybe a year ago about an Italian virology laboratory being cited for the third time with a threat to close them down. They were cited for having a "cracked hood". I didn't pay attention to it because it was too horrible to imagine...and now this...a pandemic.

Some say the virus started because some human ate a bat. Others say it originated in a laboratory in China. Others say it was invented by liberals so they could pass socialist policies. Still others say liberals invented the virus so they could impeach Trump. There's LOTS of other inconsistency about this virus too like What the symptoms are, If animals can catch it, Should masks be worn, What possible treatments there are, Is social distancing slowing the spread, Can you prevent the virus by wiping your butt so much that you go through a pack of toilet paper a day, ect ect.

The most important question is not "To whom can we affix the blame?"; instead, the most important question is "How can this virus be stopped?"

That's very true however it is very important that we understand the origin so that we can better figure out how to stop it & so that we can prevent similar things in the future. There is a big difference between that vs trying to place blame but very unfortunately some people who should be most essential for stopping this virus & for giving out much needed information(like some politicians & some reporters) are much more interested in playing the blame game.

It is not necessary to know the names of a murderer's parents in order to arrest, try, convict, and imprison him.

So why should it be necessary to know which bowl of bat soup gave us the virus?

It would be useful to know for future, if another outbreak could be avoided with more knowledge.
However, as such outbreaks can be totally natural, further outbreaks will remain possible no matter what we know about origins of the current one.
Learning to deal with pandemics is currently the most urgent and important lesson to learn for the global society - with sheer population size, more outbreaks in close future are likely.

It's important to know if the virus really did start in bats 1st so scientists & docs know to investigate the bat population for better testing & treatment. Plus it's also important to know if bats got it so people can be made aware to not eat bats & to take certain precautions when around bat & bat droppings.
It's very important to know if this virus started in a lab in China so the docs & scientists developing treatments can be given all the research & testing information that was done on this virus. It's also important to know why the virus was originally created like was it intended to be a biological weapon that somehow got unleashed on it's own population. If so other countries(think the UN) should keep a close eye on China & work to develop some kind of agreement with China so China won't work to invent other viruses that are potentially fetal for humans.
