In the radio edited version of this song, they leave out "God", but not "damn".

Maybe it's because they're afraid it will offend atheists. Or Christians if they take the word in vain.

Whatever the reason it's a stupid thing to censor when most people these days get away with dropping enough F-bombs to start WW3.

Perhaps their guidelines dictate that 'goddamn' must be censored, but that 'damn' is acceptable. If that's the case, replacing 'goddamn' with '---damn' actually makes perfect sense; they've removed as little content as possible while still ensuring the message is largely intact.

Personally, I don't think I've heard a 'clean mix' of a song in years, because I don't usually let other people pick what I'm going to listen to.

the censoring of "god" is an americanism which has lasted as long as we've been a nation, other countries without our puritanical baggage don't get our preoccupation with censoring profanity.

You should listen to the clean version of “f****n’ Problems” by A$AP Rocky. Nearly the entire song is censored, with some very strange substitutions.

A lot of folks tell me to get used to people/songs who tend to drop the S-Bombs or F-Bombs, yet they tend to be respectful to those who don't like to hear "Oh my God/Gods" (depending if anyone is either a monotheist or polytheist) and "Good Lord".

What is this, some kind of 'selective enforcement'?! Holy Mother of Mary!

Everyone has different things that offend them, whether it's sexual vulgarity, bodily functions, blasphemy/god's name in vain, certain categories of bigotry, etc.

Some people also have much broader tolerance overall than others. Out of all of those most of the language I'm most likely to judge harshly only falls into the last category and even then I'll make a quite a bit of leeway on pretty much any word but squaw. You can drop all the f-bombs, s-bombs and c-bombs you'd like because they're not nearly as offensive.

a while ago i saw a typically butchered movie shown on american tv, and "goddamn" was bleeped but n*gg*r wasn't. strange priorities here. makes about as much sense as the infamous [and embarrassing] amuuurican brouhaha over a goddamned tit displayed on the 2004 super bowl.

It's because people forget where the word 'damn' comes from.

Same with bloody and crikey. The 'blood' in question is Jesus', crikey is a deformation of Christ, like how someone's grandma might say fudge or white kids talking about their ninjas.

Interesting. Having grown up Catholic, I've always viewed both as equally bad. If you take God's name in vain, you are breaking one of the Ten Commandments. If you say "d**n," what you are actually doing is asking God to eternally condemn someone/something, which is a very, very serious thing to do. So to me, neither should be just tossed around, although as someone who is very interested in the supernatural, I have come to accept use of both (as well as "H***") if they are used in a literal sense.

9th grade, a para called me out for saying "oh god" in class. I wondered why the heck that'd be a bad thing to say. Turns out of course that she was a religious person offended by that.

you couldn't for the longest time use the word "holy" on tv here in amuuuurica, unless specifically referring to a religious function. that is why rocky j. squirrel in the bullwinkle tv cartoon would say "HOKY smokes!" as "holy smokes" was deemed a sacrilegious reference to the selection of the pope.
