Sunday April 10th - it's Mother's Day! Post something nice about your mother or mother figure, or what being a mother means to you. :heart: :salut: :queen: :heart:

I come from a family of nine kids and I'm the middle child, my dad passed away when I was 12. My mom raised us on her own and I've never known anyone with so much patience. We had a variety of temperaments yet mom didn't yell or raise a hand to us. Good meals, a comfy home, gardening, pets, Sundays at my grandparents. I have no idea how she did it! Looking back I wish I helped out more, was less trouble as a teen, called and visited more once I moved away. She always fell asleep sitting straight up on our sofa - it was a running joke. My mom is a good person, never thinking of herself. Love you mom, Happy Mother's Day. :heart: :heart: :heart: :heart: :heart:

Well, I won't say anything about my mum because that's a whole bad story, but I love being a mother! My daughter is autistic too, so we've got that understanding. :heart:

My parents told me that business men invented Mother's Day so they could earn $$$

That makes sense

Although Jarvis was successful in founding Mother's Day, she became resentful of the commercialization of the holiday. By the early 1920s, Hallmark Cards and other companies had started selling Mother's Day cards. Jarvis believed that the companies had misinterpreted and exploited the idea of Mother's Day, and that the emphasis of the holiday was on sentiment, not profit. As a result, she organized boycotts of Mother's Day, and threatened to issue lawsuits against the companies involved. Jarvis argued that people should appreciate and honor their mothers through handwritten letters expressing their love and gratitude, instead of buying gifts and pre-made cards. Jarvis protested at a candy makers' convention in Philadelphia in 1923, and at a meeting of American War Mothers in 1925. By this time, carnations had become associated with Mother's Day, and the selling of carnations by the American War Mothers to raise money angered Jarvis, who was arrested for disturbing the peace.

So yeah, it wasn't invented for profit, but it became a tool for businesses pretty fast.

She did pretty well considering she was raising an autistic boy at a time she did not know I was autistic and nobody knew much or anything about autistic behaviors.

Me & my mom had major problems getting along. We had LOTS of fights & we have both said VERY HATEFUL things towards each other during them. However I was NOT an easy kid to raise. I have a lot of various mental & physical issues besides Aspergers & noone including my parents knew the extent of them, let alone really understood how they affected me. There also were few programs & services available in my area for people with disabilities. Despite our major problems getting along, my mom did a lot more for me than most parents would of done for their kid, especially after I became an adult. A lot of the fights we've had after I was an adult were related to me being very dependent. My mom was worried about what would happen to me after she would die(hopefully won't be for a while still) since I couldn't take care of myself. She felt I wasn't trying very hard to be more independent(even thou I was doing the best I could & I didn't know how to go about things) which frustrated her & caused us to clash. My dad was a lot easier for me to get along with & he did do a lot for me too but not as much as my mom.
