A friend of mine showed me this documentary about China's only ruling empress who was deeply misunderstood by history. I find it fascinating.

Is she the one that had her late husband's favourite concubine dismembered, blinded and sent to live with the pigs for the rest of her life?

And she saved her people from starving to death during years of famine, brought years of wealth and prosperity to her country, contributed a lot to the Buddhist temples, and improved life for Chinese women by giving them the right to divorce their husbands and work powerful positions such as Prime Minister within the government.

She did horrific things to hold onto power but also did a lot of great things for her people.

I think Wu Zetian was a regular Queen Bee who knew how to rule her hive with an iron stinger. Keeping the workers and soldiers fed and happy while taking out any rivals who challenged her throne.
