Have you ever gone to use something like a train controller or something electrical to find it does not work. So one checks the track, the controller, the wiring... (Or if it was a computer one would be checking all the leads etc)... Everything!... Only to find out one has forgot to turn the power on at the mains!

Is there a word for this type of thing?

Yes there are several one of them is D'OH!

Others are painful and may cause the palm of your hand to collide with your forehead at significant velocity.
