Gatekeeping generations makes no sense.

Definitions vary, but the vast majority classify me under 'Generation Z' or 'late Gen Z'. When people talk about Gen Z, they are usually talking about what fifteen year olds are doing. The trends that occur in that group differ from the trends surrounding people in their early twenties. It does seem odd to be lumped in with this group.

Certain users on social media such as Tiktok have made videos about how if you don't follow certain fashion trends then you can't call yourself Gen Z. This makes no sense, by definition I fall into this generation. Apparently hair side parts are no longer fashionable, but personally I've grown rather fond of my side part. It's amusing to me because middle parts used to be uncool and now I'm uncool for not having one. Likewise, skinny jeans have fallen out of favour. I'm still going to wear mine though. Although I would like to try out a few more styles. Even things such as emojis are being policed. Still, fashion goes in cycles, so it'll flip around at some point. Not that it matters much. I guess we're the group that they're trying to differentiate from now. Personally I used to wear a middle part throughout my childhood, so making it into a side part was a deliberate attempt to break away from that.

I'm Gen Z by virtue of when I was born. You can't change that, can you?

I'm millennial.

My experience is that if you're gen youngest, you get slagged off.

If you're gen oldest (or assumed oldest, like my granddad is too old to be a boomer but he's just invisible in this conversation), you get slagged off too.

So nowadays that looks like: 'OK boomer' and 'OK zoomer' comments. Ten years ago, millennials were apparently ruining everything with avocado toast and hipsters...

The people in between get to ignore what generation they/we are and just be treated as regular adults.

Or the other people are put into the wrong box so for eg I'm 32 and I've had 'OK Boomer' comments from 18 yos...

Every high-end fashion advisor knows that following fads continuously is against fashion. They actually advise not to.

If you like something that's okay but to not have your own style and be the same as the rest is not cool.

Most fads have some absurd items that you should not be wearing anyway. Some don't suit anyone, really.

Defining Generations is an arbitrary and subjective endeavor.

Most Generations are defined as people born around a twenty-year span. The formative experiences of the majority of people born 10 to 20 years apart can be quite different.

People born within a one year span can have very different formative experiences based on where they live, how they were raised etc.

People born at or near the generational divide often feel part of the generation on the other side of that divide or part of both generations.

There are always people who feel that they were born at the wrong time. They are much more like people from another generation than their own.
