I’m about 75% sure that I’m on the highest-functioning end of the ASD spectrum, but I’m not incredibly sure I’d want to be extremely public about the information if it were so determined to be true. Does anyone else feel this way?

Definitely. Only relatives and select friends know. I wouldn't want to be public about it in the workplace in case of discrimination. Saying that it didn't take folks long to realise I was a bit different, but I think most though I was just nerdy and a bit of a socially awkward loner.

I wouldn't go public with just a suspicion. It would be hard to undo the announcement if you later learned you were not really on the Autism Spectrum.

Thanks a lot, guys! The issue actually goes a lil deeper though. If anyone has the time to read through and give an opinion, much appreciated: I’m actually a parolee (long story). I’ve served time in prison. Life now out of prison is good except that for certain reasons I’ve been court-mandated by the parole board not to live with my mother. I’m living with my aunt. I’d rather be living with my mother (and my little brothers, who I helped raise). My mother’s idea is for me to write a letter to my sentencing judge and tell him that because of my autism it’s hard for me to support myself unless I’m living with my mother. I like her idea except for this: the judge probably knows a lot of people locally (including potential future employers), and who knows who he will tell? I don’t want the letter adversely affecting future potential job opportunities.

Your original post said you were not sure. Have you been officially diagnosed as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Lying to a judge would likely be a bad idea.

most people have to know about my autism because im quite obvious

well im not stereotypal autistic and i know that autism is based on the known stereotypes more than individuality but i mean i lack social awareness and can say and do things that arent what people expect and when im in a socialising setting i can have meltdowns if things arent going how i like

they all know i have autism at work and lucky for me my boss understand s me probably because he fancied me but i pretend to ignore that and just feel lucky that he is on my side and gives me more leeway
some people at work dont believe i have autism because i lack all the stereotypes
