May Day! May Day! The real me is back. The sensitive war relic, not that there's anything wrong with it.

Happy May Day, everyone.

Because one Labour Day was enough?

It annoys me that people are celebrating May Day so very wrong. Couldn't they have chosen a different date rather than engaging in yet another instance of overshadowing an existing holiday for other purposes?

They almost certainly picked it because it was a pre-existing holiday, so they'd actually have the day off.

As far as the UK is concerned, I think May Day was instituted as a 'Bank Holiday' (public holiday) by Jim Callaghan's Labour government in around 1978. Not sure whether it replaced a pre-existing holiday, I'll have to look into that.

Over here, we have an excessive number of such fixtures at this time of year, in my view. There are Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday in March/April, then we have May Day and the 'May Bank Holiday' (last Monday of the month, formerly known as 'Whit Monday'). In a week's time, we also have yet another of these events for the coronation of King Charles III. Yawn....
