It depends.
If you live in America, it probably is.
Anywhere else, not.

It is a mild cuss word to my understanding, used to describe something unpleasant, of poor quality, useless etc.

My brother got slapped in the face for saying it in front of my aunt. My parents don't consider it a curse word.

In other words, it depends.

"crap" is often used as a less offensive alternative to the cuss word that starts with "sh".

Some people may find the word "crap" offensive, but it is not considered nearly as offensive as "s**t".

This forum censors "s**t" and doesn't censor "crap".

According to the christian school my grandson attends, yes, it is a cuss word. He got in trouble a year or two ago for saying it in class. I had a hard time not asking him, "what's up with that crap?"

Seriously though, it really does depend on who you ask. It's like that for any word like that...gosh, heck, darn...they're really just replacements for cuss words and for some it's an acceptable work around, for others they're equally offensive. *shrugs*

George Carlin quipped that he got arrested for indecency in Las Vegas for "using the word 's**t' in a town were the biggest games is called 'craps'".

I think it was seen as such in Canada and the US up until the mid to late 90s, but not so much now.
I remember the "Kamp Krusty" episode on the classic Simpsons where Bart told the news reporter "This was the crappiest camp ever... wait, can you say 'crap' on TV?", and the news reporter said "You can on this network."

You say "poo" or "poop", people will think you're childish, but if you don't want to say s**t you can usually say crap and it be seen as PG-rated, at least. There are still people who really don't like the word, though.

Thomas Crapper (baptised 28 September 1836; died 27 January 1910) was an English plumber and businessman. He founded Thomas Crapper & Co in London, a plumbing equipment company. the word etymologically is a corruption of his name.

I would say no, but if someone is offended by it and you don't want to offend them, I wouldn't use it around them.

It’s called wooden swearing.I got in trouble for saying dagburnit by a devout Christian.Apparently replacing the offensive word with with a less offensive one is still offensive.

Adults considered both curse words when I was a kid & teen.

There's a type of fish called Crappie so that usage of the word shouldn't be offensive to anyone but some kids & adults like me would still laugh
