Because of propaganda. The only difference between an ID and a REAL ID is that there's some extra security features and it requires proving your citizenship. Most modern IDs in the US have plenty of security features, but some also require proving that you're a citizen.

There's completely and utterly no reason for that nonsense and by tying it to driver's licenses, it means that people who aren't in the country legally have to drive illegally if they drive at all.

For things that require citizenship, we already have a bunch of options, passport cards, passports, social security card + driver's license. It's just a bunch of nonsense.

I'm not up to date with the times. I have an ID, but it expired, should I get a REAL ID, my ID expired 5 years ago.

It honestly depends on you, your life, and what you want and/or need. The simple answer is no, you are not required by law to have or carry an ID in most US states.

There are things that you will need to have a valid for however, things such as flying, banking, and for age verification in some venues and businesses. Banking is usually the reason most people end up getting an ID as not you cannot cash checks or most other financial actions without a valid ID to prove who you are.

As your ID expired 5 years ago I doubt that you will need to get a new one unless you want one to go travel or decide you need to use a bank.

It's just for planes and federal facilities. A noncompliant ID doesn't prove your right to be in the country.

It's unlikely to be needed, an CA appears to still offer a regular ID.
