For those who like writing - do you like also entering writing contests? :) Did you ever win anything in such a contest? :D What was it? Over the course of the last few years, I entered at least like a dozen or so such contests and I managed to win several times - the best thing I have ever managed to win for my work was an e-book reader I love to use :D I entered one such a contest two days ago and tomorrow (as it's late evening here in Poland now) I'll enter a fairy tale writing contest :) If my stories turn out to be the best, they will get published in real books, can you imagine? And this children's story will get recorded in an audiobook - if only it is going to be the best story, of course. One of my children's stories was once even read by me on the Internet radio in January this year.

My mom, when I told her I was going to enter the writing contest (the fairy tale story), said that I shouldn't write a fairy tale about cadavers  I asked why she thought I could ever write a fairy tale about corpses  to which she replied it would be something very in my style  But no, it is going to be a cheerful story - although I DO admit now that it would be great to write such a cute story about a little vampire :D

I'm considering entering a writing contest. What have I got to lose?

Is a cadaver a rare word in English then? I always thought that a native speaker should know it. I think my story could be a bit scary indeed - maybe I'll write about a lovable little vampire who helps a child afraid of the dark that darkness doesn't necesserily need to be scary :D

What sort of writing contest are you going to enter, CockneyRebel?

I've heard of cadavers. Haven't met one...well, except at their own funerals.

I wouldn't say rare, but it's used in limited circumstances compared to corpse.

I haven't heard about any writing contests since I was in school many years ago. And the stories I have written are more of the children's/young adult genre. I know most children's story contests are only for children who write.

More like jargon. It's preferred in medical contexts, but wouldn't be used in most other contexts. In most contexts corpse or even body would be the expected nomenclature.

When I was 17, I was in high school, there was a LotR fanfic writing contest organized by our school but I finally didn't enter it (although I wanted) because I was in a hospital then. Anyway, I never liked the LotR fandom too much, to tell you the truth. :)

Ah, thank you for this explanation. It's like in Polish - the most common term for a corpse is zwłoki but nieboszczyk and trup are more colloquial. Especially trup is a colloquial term.

I've given thought to entering one. On the site where I publish chapters of my story, they have a Writeathon which challenges people to write 55,555 in 5 weeks. I only got onto the site near the end of the last one, but I might participate in a future one.

Back when I started writing I did write twice as much in four weeks though, but I was also possessed at the time which was probably an unfair advantage.

Merci, and thank you for explaining how it works in Polish. :D
