Do you hate it when you want to use a word and you just can put your finger on it? :x

I'm trying to find this word that is to do with the negative or ineffective effect of using a drug in combination with another. I really need to use that word, I think it begins with an a- prefix but I'm not sure.

Help I need it ASAP.

antagonistic = drugs when combined have a lesser effect than when used alone

additive = drugs work the same either alone or in combination

symbiotic = drugs work better in combination than when they are used alone

The closest word I can think of is "contraindicated", but I do think there is another word and it is escaping me as well!

eta: You could also say that one drug has an "inhibitory effect" or "inhibitory influence" on another.

what is your context then because I teach medical microbiology at university and these are the terms used to describe the results of antibiotic combination experiments

Well an example is mixing St John Wort with SSRI and causing Serotonin Syndrome or the contraceptive pill and antibiotics so it the pregnancy is not prevented.

It covers all possibilities other than it working taking into account normal side effects.

It's an inadvertent interaction producing an adverse reaction.

adverse = worse than the expected outcome
agonistic = affects the target in the same way therefore diminishing the effect of the other drug
antagonistic = blocking the effect of the other drug

Did you ever find your word in the end?

Oh wow, I do this all the time. I get blinders on and can't think up the word I want to use. I often just use descriptive words about what I am thinking of... but it makes a really messed up sentence.

I do this with spelling too... I'm a terrible speller... and if I can't think of the proper spelling of a word... I just think up a different word that I know how to spell.

Firefox's built in spell checker is a godsend.
