Went over to my brother’s place for Hanukkah. Besides my brother, my brother in law, sister, sister in law, niece and nephews were there.

Ever since the pandemic at least one person has gotten COVID, the flu or both when we were supposed to get together for Hanukkah. We would say we get together later, January would come people would get busy and it would never happen. If my sister would visit later on I would give her the gifts meant for her side of the family, she would give me my gifts from her side. My brother same deal. This often would not happen until well into February. They were not Hanukkah parties by any means just regular visits where we could finally unload the damn gifts.

With the flu running rampant in New York I was convinced this year’s event would be doomed also. Close call, one of my nephews caught it the week prior. That is was the first family Hanukkah get together in six years and recent events made it special.

As I have been doing for decades now I will be home by myself for New Years Eve.

That's really good that it worked out for you this year

It's just my daughter and myself for Christmas and New Year

It's been this way for many years apart from last year when my ex came to stay but that's done with now

We have a really nice time and we watch all the shows we enjoy and we do presents and I do all the cooking and that's all

Oh and I'll try not to stuff my face with chocolate as well

We're having a family dinner tonight (Christmas Eve) in a town about 35 miles away. It will be dark when I'm ready to come back and I really hate to drive in the dark so I might skip it.

Sometimes we have a more limited get together on Christmas Day. The usual host had just gotten out of the hospital days before Christmas and couldn't handle it so I cooked a turkey breast and fixed some vegetables for us to have a Christmas Dinner. We had five people show up: me, my younger brother, our usual host, a nephew, and a grand nephew.

I learned my lesson. I don't know if we are doing anything tomorrow so this year I'm planning on cooking pulled pork instead. I'm getting ready to go to the grocery store to get what I need.

So for Christmas Day, the menu will probably be pulled pork, egg noodles, and green beans. And maybe a pie for desert.

The lower heating element in the oven is out and so I really can't do much with the oven. On the other hand, I don't need an oven for pulled pork.

The way I fix it is to buy country style pork ribs, optionally brown them in a frying pan, coat them with a pork rib rub, add them to the pressure cooker with water in the bottom, sprinkle some liquid smoke on them, and cook them in the pressure cooker for an hour.

Then, when done, I remove the bones (sometimes the bones turn into something like chalk) and use two forks to break them up.

The results, if not burnt, are very good.

With my old pressure cooker with the weighted thing on the top, it took a lot of water to run for an hour and I sometimes ran out. Now that I have an Instant Pot in which the pressure is maintained without blowing out steam, it is a lot easier to cook them.

I don't know. If my oven worked, I'd make some Apple Crisp instead of pie. Since it doesn't, I'll just get a pie at the store. Unfortunately, the pies at the grocery store are not very good.

My sons have been kind enough to play Civilization 7 every day this week. Their suggestion. I'm grateful because they have lives outside of spending time with me.
YS also made some changes to the Civ 7 game setup so I appear to be doing better.

Tomorrow, if I'm lucky, I'll play another round with the boys, and I'll fix a small dinner for myself.
Today I bought, and maybe it sounds sad and pathetic, but I bought some instant mash potatoes. When I was younger I lived on instant mash potatoes and instant scrambled eggs. The eggs were a horrendous to clean up. What else will I have? Chicken and baked broccoli. Almost respectable.

I went to my mother's house for our Christmas Eve Supper and gift opening.

We had both roast turkey and KFC because my aunt is from Japan and that is what they normally eat at Christmas. We also had strawberry shortcake for dessert, which is also traditionally eaten for Christmas in Japan when it's more of a summer treat in Canada. Early summer is when strawberries are in season, after all.

My brother and sil gave me a package of pens that are shaped like little sardines. Really. They are pretty cute, though.
