The German that I most admire is Nena. She's famous for the song, 99 Red Balloons. I also admire Franzil Lang. He was yodeler and singer. He was known as The King of The Alps.

Oh I could go for Albert Einstein.

I like Jakob Johann von Uexküll a lot too. I think he was the one (?) who said Struktur hemmt Strukturbildung ('structure impedes development') which is one of my favourite lines. And we have him to thank for the concept of the Umwelt.

It is still J.S. Bach for me if I can include pre-unification people

I'm a classical music nerd, and there are a LOT of German composers I admire (even if you leave out the many German-speaking Austrians). Many of them seem to be grouped in clusters.

Johann Sebastian Bach, his son Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach, and CPE Bach's godfather Georg Philipp Telemann.

Ludwig van Beethoven, obviously. I used to use an avatar of Schroeder from "Peanuts" on WP, 'cos he loves playing Beethoven.

Robert Schumann, his wife, Clara Schumann (who was also a composer) and their friend, Johannes Brahms.

Felix Mendlessohn-Bartholdy and his sister, Fanny Hensel, who was also a composer.

Ha! Another Max. At first I thought Max Weber, the artist, but he was not German. The sociologist Max Weber was German. Cool.
I am selecting Max Ernst, surrealist painter, married to Dorothea Tanning.
Max was German and a fabulous artist.
Dorothea was born in the Illinois, U.S.
I like both of them as artists.

There are several composers I greatly admire too. Ludwig von Beethoven is #1. The others come in a close second, only because I learned about Beethoven first.

Bach comes to mind as a favourite . But Beethoven is up there too. And of Course 99 Red Balloons is very good.
yespevially the German version. by Nina .And am loving the Lyrics quite well. Also ... Very poignant words considering the current times we live in . 8O :ninja: ...... :D. Victor Schlanberger, is of couse of great interest to me, with his work with water on molecular level .Through simple methods.

Alexander von Humboldt was also pretty awesome. He was a scientist and explorer in the late 18th to early 19th century. Way ahead of his time in a lot of ways: he was the first to really study how geography and ecology interact, for instance. He has a mountain, an oceanic current, a species of penguin and a species of large squid named after him. Humboldt also argued passionately against racism and slavery, which puts him ahead of many scientists of his time.

I hate to nominate a politician, but I can't think of anyone who rates higher than Angela Merkel. I sort of doubt many Germans would agree though.

Cool thread.

I'm sorry but I don't really know much about German people really.
