It's a lyric from the old Christmas carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas."

I authentically thought at first that it's the reference to the five gold rings of the Planeteers from the cartoon about the Captain Planet

I myself never grew up with original either and instead heard a parody of it from a All State Mayhem guy commercial. Unsure why it's not on YouTube but here it is. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xmk59b

When I was a kid I used to hear the Muppets (from The Muppet Show) singing the 12 Days of Christmas, and Miss Piggy would sing, "FIVE... GOLD... RINGS... BA DUMP BUMP BUMP!!" It was pretty funny.

I heard a parody of this song around Christmas time a LONG time ago on a localish TV station from around New Orleans. The song was New Orleans & Louisiana themed. That lyric was Fried Onion Rings

There have been many versions of this song across history and different countries. The most well-known tune was first written down around 1903 by a musician called Frederick Austin. He is thought to have changed the "five gold rings" bit.

Some possible reasons:

Gold! Wow! Fancy!

Five is an important number to humans, due to their hands having five digits.

It helps break up the song a bit, so you're not repeating the same tiny musical phrase 11 times in a row. Just six times in a row, which is bad enough. Hence why the second half of the tune also changes once you get past the 5th day.

I'll be enjoying my five golden rings in February when I'm watching The Olympics.

I used to hear another song on the radio called "The Twelve Pains of Christmas", and they would sing "The fifth thing at Christmas that's such a pain to me... FIVE MONTHS OF BILLS!"
