I'm good at self-promotion in print. Not so good in person, a shortcoming of which I have had the recent reminder during a few dismal job interviews.

Terrible at self-promation, in any forms.

It just kind of goes against my character. I don't like to be boastful, even though I want to be appreciated.

There's quite a difference between shyness online and shyness offline.

Really? I'm finding my online shyness is basically the same as my offline.

I've definitely noticed a difference. I have a lot more time to figure out what I want to say, and how I want to say it, so I'm not nearly as concerned about fumbling with my words. Not having to force eye contact or try and read any sort of body language also takes some of the anxiety away.

Definately not a self-promoter.
Were I, then something might get done with all my piles of artwork that I can't figure out what to do with. Instead, I'm self-effacing, it's a protective/defensive measure to point out my shortcomings before anyone else can. Don't want to be accused of disappointing someone nor do I want to give someone else chance to disappoint me.

Am a depressive/realist & can't pretty things up, gloss over the flaws, or be dishonest in my appraisal (expression of perception).

I am not one at all. I have a presence in places but that's only for contact if necessary....

Horrible at it. Which is bad, since, as a self-professed capitalist, I'd like to make my living through music and art. Couple a nobile concept of a pure artist with Aspergers's...I've worked on it, and force myself to do it, but to little success. I'm best behind the scenes.

Same here.

I notice that I still don't socialize a lot on most sites. At the BBS I went to before WP, I stuck to the debate threads and did not socialize with the other posters or joke around. Here I feel a lot more comfortable because I know everybody's weird, so I'm not afraid to say the things that pop into my head.

As for the original question, I can self-promote when necessary. Sometimes I suspect that I have a hard time not going a bit overboard and seeming vain, especially in a place where I joke around, like here on WP. But nobody has told me, so I don't really know.

That's exactly how I act in real life though...

At first I am very cautious and test the waters, don't really say anything or reveal much of my "fun" side.

With my friends, at first I was really cautious... and mostly just said "important" things. When I am comfortable, I just say whatever amusing thing pops into my head.

It isn't even that I don't say anything when I am cautious, it's actually that nothing amusing is even going on in my head.

I'm still a bit paranoid about my point being taken the right way, and it's stopped me from posting from time to time. Just like it's stopped me from speaking...

Is self-promotion the same thing as being a spammy attention whore? :P

Hmmm... I'm not sure how to answer your question. I neither go out of my way to promote myself, nor do I tend to hold back when I speak, and I can be more than a little opinionated about things; if I agree with what someone says, I tell her/him; if I think someone is full of s**t, I also tell her/him. I speak only for myself, but I find that my personality here is not unlike my personality in person, with the possible exception that in person I am even more tangenty and rambly; in person I speak in much the same manner in which I write here, which probably makes me a bit difficult to follow, for those who are unused to me. Just last night I was basically accused of using “big words” to promote myself, which is an unfortunate misperception of me. Happily, I'm blessed by a few who seem to appreciate my method of madness and mad mannerisms; others seem to be put off by them; most probably just ignore me or dismiss me as mad, which is probably the easiest thing to do. I am that which I am (oddly, this is about the sixth time I've happened upon the need to utter this today).

Good fortune,

- Icarus is half-priced through the end of the weekend

No. On a job application, I will list my educational and work experience, but I am terrible in interviews. Beyond the basic facts stated on my resume, I really bomb out at presenting myself.
