Avatars?

What's with the dang little pics? Why do some folks change them every hour? It's quite maddening...

Do people become attached to their little pic? Do they use it to represent something? does it have meaning?

Personally for me it's a lot like body langauge, tatoos and piercings... things I'll just never understand. Nothing against them but so completely foreign I have no hope of understanding.

I have a very particular aesthetic appeal. I need to have things "fit" with the rest. I think it's an extension of the lining up things instead of using them. I will not post to a forum that does not allow any custom avatars or signatures.

I change my avatar about once a week or two. Any more then that is ridiculous. I do see the appeal of keeping the same for a long period of time though.
