Ones I've gotten from places:


When I was 10 and was in a shelter at a high school during the 1998 ice storm, I made some popsicle-stick boxes and painted them, they also had sparkles... I made 3 and kept them... a lot of the kids there were also given little cartons of milk that had a unique picturee and said ti was for kids in school... and I kept it as a souvenir (the carton, after drinking the milk, that is)...


From my grae 11 trip to Europe:

drink bottle labels (Fanta, smoothie from London, etc)
lighter that said ROMA on it, from an Italian trattoria
pen from that same trattoria, I think
colorful earrings from Monte-Carlo
String of metallic and blue beads of some other material, with an Eiffel Tower pendant on it in this smooth glassy-metallic-stone dark gray material...
t-shirt that shows sperm moving in the direction of Switzerland with EVERYBODY LOVES SWITZERLOAND on it...
t-shirt with a yellow sign on it that said "Warning: Swiss wildlife" or something... withj a deer in front of the sign, I think...

I took one or two stones from a rocky beach on the Isle of Capri and wrote "Capri" on them...
I got a Swiss Card... in Germany, but oh well. It had a pen, a knife, an ice pick I think, and some other stuff I don't know... it was also a ruler... centimetres on one side, inches on the other.
From Monte-Carlo I got a life-preserver thing with rope around it and "Welcome Aboard" on it I think, but it was French, and had knots on this board thing in the centre; it was to hang on the wall. It had plaques that had the names of the sailing knots in French.
I got some cloth sort of bags of potpourri from Nice...
I got 2 pairs of dangling-ball earrings from Florence...
I kept my boarding passes...
I had a Berne postcard showing the bears in the bear pit...
I had a Koln post card that was made of some special material, it showed the church and stuff and it showed the city as sparkly and glamorous... the picture shone...
Printouts from hotel sites that we were given before the trip...
From our Quebec city field trip in grade 5, I have or had a pencil sharpener that's also a toy cannon...
From the Niagara Falls field trip I had that plastic souvenir raincoat thing from the Maid of the Mist and a fancy decorated can of fancy fruit-flavored, fruit-shaped jujubes...
From my stay at the Montreal Children's Hospital I had some little paper pill cups, a cherry Chupa Chups lollipop (and even after I ate it I kept the wrapper), I also had their code of ethics booklet...
From a field trip in grade 3 to Macdonald farm I had the empty milk carton that smelled like the cows (we were all given little cartons of milk from the cows).

I have my memories, and my music. . .

It's not wise to be attached to owning things when one is a nomad.

I do, however, carry notebooks, in which I write and draw. . . and the dozen or so full ones I've got are on the short list in case of fire. . .

Also, a very small box of tree ornaments. . . My favorite is a lit metal-cut Nativity from St. Patrick's in New York, though the NSA cryptography wheel is pretty cool too.

And many of my clothes, and other practical things, are of sentimental value that way- my favorite dress pants came from a thrift store in Melbourne, a favourite sarong from Singapore. . . an awesome sweater from a small town somewhere in the middle of Nevada. . . kitchen knives from a trade day in Arkansas. . .

I can't remember most of the things I've gotten from places since I was little. It would mainly probably have just been stationary from museums I visited as a child. I also have a slate from the Ragged School Museum.

I tend to get booklets from places as well, like The Tower of London or programmes from the theatre, when I visit them.

I also buy punk band t-shirts from punk gigs I go to, and CDs, although that's partly because I always need new t-shirts because my rats chew holes in them, and partly because I like the bands and want to support them financially (local punk bands sometimes don't make any money for playing) and the CDs are just because I like the bands.

I move from country to country (I am a traveller) and from all places where I have lived I tend to keep copies of my rental contracts, residence permits, bank cards, and so on. I store pictures of all places I go to and lived in. And I take my music (record collection and MP3 collection) with me everywhere I go. You indeed cannot take a lot with you when travelling around from place to place, though I try to take a few things with me from at least every place where I lived for a while.

I also have souvenirs from the mini Myst convention I crashed almost 3 years ago... 2 Myst 4: Revelation mugs, a note to one fo the people that ditched me once after figuring out I was probably me, a newspaper clipping (from before the convention) announcing the release of Myst 4: Revelation, a booklet on Montreal with Myst sort of stuff in it and the itinerary for the convention, and the Uru Complete Chronicles that one of the people there gave me.

Doesn't the chaos of owning that much stuff ever get to you?

Jainaday, whereabouts did you live or travel to? I am a traveller myself so hence my interest. I lived in Belgium, Ireland and the UK before. Hope to live in Israel and Norway the next years although I may do a short stint in Holland or Germany first.

Almost all the US, bit of a stint in Australia, with longish layovers in Singapore and London.

I've not been to Alaska or Hawaii, but I'd covered most of the inland states before I was 15.

I crave Europe.

I only recall my trip in 1989 to the pocono's with my parents and their I bought a wallet.

I also have shirts from various places I have been to for vacation, also with my parents'

first time I ever traveled outa state without mom and dad, i bought a camera to take pictures of all the places that meant something to me b4 I moved.

Alaska would probably be the first state I'd visit when going to the US. I like far northern places and would love to see Barrow and Nome. My big dream in terms of North America, is Canada's arctic archipelago and especially Ellesmere Island, the true edge of the world. *sigh*

You should come to Europe though, we've got lots of nice places awaiting you
