I've just heard Slade singing 'I wish it could be christmas everyday' on an Argos ad.
That song is always the first sign for me.
EDIT: It was Wizard that sang the song not Slade.

When my local supermarket moves the jam and dogfood so they can put out the mince pies, cakes and crackers, often before they get out the Hallowe'en stuff

I used to work in retail, so basically anything after September. It starts earlier and earlier. 
But it doesn't start for me until Thanksgiving.

The evenings getting darker earlier, the weather turning chilly and the xmas market going up in the high street.
And hearing the song 'The power of love'... the version often played at Xmas.
