There is a road, where my mother lives, that curves around. It is very hard to see oncoming traffic coming straight ahead so sticking your nose out is a dangerous thing to do. No matter how careful I am I occasionally get grief from cars behind when I am turning left. I don’t get this problem on any familiar road from anyone.

I hounded someone for showing me the fingers. I chased the guy down the road flashing at him, I never go more then 40mph on a 30mph road . He was determined to get away, he tried to get over the level-crossing but it was closing so he circled the round about and drove in the opposite direction over taked some cars and jumped some traffic lights to get away.

I felt bad for making the car jump the traffic lights though as it could have corsed an accident. I though that the guy would get out of the car and face what I have to give him. They guy look like his is beggin it in his BMW and look tough enough. But all he wanted to do is get away.

I usually never get angry at anything on the road. People can make road mistake, not everyone is an excellent driver. Not everyone show road courtesy, maybe they don’t think about it. But when someone show blatant act of disrespect, I get pissed off .

I don't know why people insist on using vulgar gestures like that.

I guess I'll never understand the human psyche.

As long as it allows us to express extreme displeasure without fisticuffs.....

But I never do road rage beyond flipping someone the bird....

The thing I don't understand is why putting one finger into the air causes offense :?

If I put my leg in the air, no one reacts. If I put up my little finger, no one reacts. If I put up my middle finger though, people would get angry. They are just fingers

I know what you mean about respect, I feel the same. When someone flips me the bird I show them my pinkie finger with meaning. I let them sit & wonder what it means. It did at one time have a meaning, my mum said back in her day (40s-50s I believe) it meant "Don't care enough to send your very best". The meaning seems to be lost now, but that only adds to it I think. I'm sure they can imagine much worse definitions all on their own. (edited = phrase)

Quote:
The origin of this gesture is speculative, but is quite possibly thousands of years old. It is identified as the digitus impudicus ("impudent finger") in Ancient Roman writings[1] and reference is made to using the finger in the Ancient Greek comedy The Clouds by Aristophanes. It was defined there as a gesture intended to insult another. The widespread usage of the finger in many cultures is likely due to the geographical influence of the Roman Empire and Greco-Roman civilization. Another possible origin of this gesture can be found in the first-century Mediterranean world, where extending the digitus impudicus was one of many methods used to divert the ever present threat of the evil eye.[2]

There is a popular story about English bowmen waving fingers at the French knights who did not manage to cut them off during the Hundred Years' War. However, this is a confusion with the origins of the V sign, which are themselves in question.[3]

Another possible origin is the phallic imagery of the raised middle finger (the middle finger being the longest finger on the human hand), similar to the Italian version of the bent elbow insult. Also, there is a variation of the finger where it can be done by performing The Fangul, by sticking out the finger during the throwing motion.

Quote:
The insulting version of the gesture (with the palm inwards) is often compared to the offensive gesture known as "the finger". The "two-fingered salute", or "bowfinger", as it is also known, is commonly performed by flicking the V upwards from wrist or elbow. "The finger" is traceable to Roman times [6], but may be unrelated in origin, as the insulting V sign is largely restricted to the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. United States president George H. W. Bush, attempting to give the "peace sign", once gave the insulting V sign to onlookers while touring Australia, unaware of what it meant to Australians[5].

All kidding aside. You have to be careful. You don't know if the person is packing and or psychotic.

Quite frankly, I dont see the problem. I'd be glad to have you in my gang... A little respect can go a long way in preventing enraged aspies chasing you down the road...

I've found a sarcastic "thumbs up" can be even more effective.

*looks around* I guess I'll have to be the jerk here...

I understand he was rude, and that gesture was inappropriate, but that has to be one of the dumbest things you can do on the road! Someone could have been killed, and over what? Some idiot who got you mad? I can imagine the news story 'Family of three killed by driver trying to escape enraged Asperger sufferer!"

Please remember that when driving you're taking your life, as well as those of everyoone around you, into your hands. It's not the time or the place to lose your temper.

Sorry, but it's the truth...

As someone on the other side of road rage, I was once trying to drive home from a physician consult in a large city. It was rush hour, and people were doing their usual dog - eat- dog driving. One guy in a mini van got enraged when my smaller car beat his out of the merge lane and onto the highway. He pulled out behind me, and started shaking his fists, yelling and cursing and trying to tailgate. This at about 50 mph! I switched lanes, and he followed. I switched back and so did he. I was so scared he might have a weapon or something, that I missed my exit and got lost. But the funny thing was that he kept following, and because I was making so many pointless turns and getting on and off so many exits, he lost interest and drove away.
