Once a shrine to willful ignorance and slavery, now a shrine to knowledge and capitalism.

This is beautiful.

And no, I'm not a tree-hugger, I found the link on another page.

I love how you slam religion as being something for the ignorant, yet say the architecture is beautiful. *shakes head* They built churchs like that for a reason. If religion was just about demeaning and oppressing people, why would they invest so much in making places of worship like that? For centuries, walking into a building like that transported people into another world, inspired their imagination and creativity, offered a different perspective of the world and the self, and allowed people to put down the mundane and spend time thinking about their own relationship with the divine and universal. And these building still have that power - that's why people often try to savage them by making them into something else (often to lesser effect). Perhaps you should reconsider your own logic, and perhaps refine your attitude.

Contrary to the article's claim that churches are become extinct, it's really just this architectural style of church that's no longer deemed cost-efficient to either build or maintain for religious purposes. Actually there's a recent increase in churchs andother places of worship - be they small, large and "mega" sized - being built in most areas of the world, including the US.

Those churches aren't cost-effective to build because they can't force people at swordpoint to pay for their construction anymore, they rely on voluntary donation and membership now.
