Yesterday I met the Mayor of my city. I was at the library and he was dropping off a book the same time as me. The only other time I have met a Mayor was when I was in a parking lot of a grocery store and the former Mayor nearly ran me over. He was driving way too fast.

New Mexico isn't really named after Mexico, since it was named in 1563 and Mexico didn't drop its "New Spain" name until 1821.

Michigan, or at least the lower peninsula used to be known as Nouvelle Canada (New Canada), but I'm struggling to find the map with that name used. Lower Canada is Quebec, Upper Canada is Ontario, so 'New Canada' must but what's further inland than where Upper Canada ends.
