dogs and barbed wire

One of my dogs just tore a big flap of skin off her chest wall off on some barbed wire.

I dropped her at the vet straight away - the vet is not sure it will sew up well as there may be no blood supply to the flap of skin.

I can call in about an hour to see how it went. Pick her up at close of business. Estimated cost About $450 AUD!

I feel so bad for you! I had a dog whose leg almost had to be amputated once due to falling in a deep, snow-covered hole in the ground (he had arthritis anyway, so that didn't help the situation).

What breed is she? Is there any news as of now?

She's a whippet, skin injuries can be common because the fur is very thin.

I just rang and the vet said she's fine and awake after the surgery. She'll fill me in on the details of after care and any problems when I pick her up in about 3 hours.

yah, it looked really gross, a big bloody flap of skin hanging down from her chest.

well i picked her up an hour ago, lotsa stiches (and 'buttons') but it looks ok, she's just sore and a bit woozy from the anaesthetic. she's sleeping now, so fingers crossed it will heal well.

I'm lucky that there is no barbed wire around my area. But their are always risks with pets.
I hope that everything goes ok and that her recovery goes well.

thanks for the replies. i'm not on my usual computer or I'd post photos, the sewn on patch of skin is a bit bigger than a pack of cigarettes (when flaccid, like just hanging off), when it was sown on it had to be stretched out like normal, so it's maybe two pack of cigarettes size.

We just have to wait and hope it 'takes'. Probably about a week, well the stitches come out then anyway. I got a couple of days painkillers for her.

If it's anything like when she was spayed she'll probably be fine and happy in about 36 hours, it's just that the stitches become uncomfortable.

I hope she feels better soon and doesn't experience any complications.
