I have a couple of private messages on this site, but even using the sweetest computer in the world (a mac), I can't get it to read them. It just tells me the date it was sent, but everything else in that field seems to be an image. Screen readers hate images. To whomever sent me those, I'm not ignoring you or just being an a**hat, I just can't find where you change those settings.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way to get the W.P. site to display the source of the private message. There's no alternate display mode. Your screen reader has the source, maybe you can gently coax it out of it. :) But you would know much better than I.

I sent you a private message with some text in it, so you can make sure there's not an incompatibility between your screen reader and the PM system, and that you can read text PM's. If you can read text messages and it's not an incompatibility, I think your best solution is just to reply to whoever sent the message and tell them not to send you images.

Strange, I see someone has recently sent me a message, assuming it was you, but all I see is the date. Might have to just contact Alex again. It's weird that posting should work just fine but anything private won't read.

FWIW, I checked my outbox and it shows that you have not read the message I sent you.

The message is displayed in a tabular format. Each line represents a message and contains a picture, 2 long links, the date, and then a checkbox. The long links contain the text of the message subject and the author of the message. They link to the actual message and the author's profile respectively. It seems weird that you're not able to see the links as I assume you can see them in other places.

Yah, I can see links in other places, but for some reason not there. I can see that someone has sent me a message, the date, the checkbox and the other folders. I can even move messages into the saved folder, but no matter what I just can't read them. Strange. Maybe I should just try to get one of the chat clients to work instead. Do you know which one might work best for mac?

I did a little googling, looking for an IRC client that was friendly to the visually-impaired. I found a windows solution but not a mac one. Sorry. :(

I PM'ed Alex and let him know he should read this thread.

Thanks! It's appreciated. I've gotten plenty of support and understanding on this site.

Hi Kate, have you tried installing some accessibility add-ons(extensions/plugins) for Firefox?

BEST OPTION:
http://chrispederick.com/work/web-developer/
Select > Options > Persist Features
Select > CSS > Disable styles
Select > Images > Disable Images
Select > Disable > Disable Javascript

hope that helps :)
BTW, welcome to WP.

Something like this might help, but I can't use firefox, so I use safari. Do you know of any similar plug-ins for the safari browser?

I'll go back and check Safari on my mac, but I do not recall any problems.

I pretty much just use Firefox and Opera.. although Opera has it's problems when uploading images... just one little character difference in the string.

Austin! One of only two places I'd live if I ever moved back to Texas! Lucky you!

I just checked my Safari browser and I can read my messages just fine. I have Safari 3.0.4

Could it be with your settings here on Wrong Planet?

Mac, are you using a screenreader? KS is using special text-to-speech software to "see" wrong planet because she's visually impaired.

It could be with my settings on WP, but did you use the screen reader voiceover to read your private messages, and it read them aloud with no problems? I should've guessed you'd show up in this thread soon enough, especially after I saw you in the last one. And you have Mac in your user name. Cool.

OH DUH! I forgot you use the voice reading thingy... I don't use it so I do not remember what it's called

I blame my ADD/HD for the memory lapse.
sorry

I can try that out though and let you know, but it will take a bit until I get everything figured out!

LOL, I totally hate my memory sometimes... I can't even remember people I talk to on WP!

Kate, this may be a pain in the derrier, but could you tell me your setting in voiceover?

I want to set up my macbook just like yours to see if mine works.

I'd be happy to share but it's a long long throw from California to Texas, LOL

LOL Okay this is just really funny this whole thing. Well I'm not sure which settings in voiceover you're speaking of, since there are so many, but no matter what you set it for any screen reader won't read images unless the graphic has a description tag. I'm not sure what those private messages are written in though. HTML works fine I know. ANd sometimes my memory gets on my nerves too, but that's because I have OCD. I'll be trying to figure this out for a long time, and Monday I sent my professor a paper and had nightmares about switching from mac to an old windows word processor. Couldn't be sure it was in the right file type or format, and I couldn't see it either.
