if I were to wash all my clothes in cold water, would it be the same as washing in warm or hot?

trying to conserve oil.

Fight for the bright topic

So many detergents for cold water. I work in a commercial laundry which uses mostly cold water now. The Tide products and Cheers are always good. You might want to soak stains first. Be careful about bleach, unless it is for sensitive fabrics. Do not wash clothes after every wearing because too much washing can weaken fabrics, unless, of course, your clothes get industrialy dirty. I like the Tide-to-go stick--the secret is to get the stain as soon as possible!.

The dingies can be nasty little annoyances. Love your clothes, treat them well, and they will last for a long time.('')

Warm and Hot water can take away colors if wash with whites and mixed them together.

Cold Water is better and it conserves energy as well.

According to my boyfriend, whites will turn gray eventually if you wash them in cold water only. He says that's why all my white workout tees are gray now. But I ignore him and stuff the washer with everything from jeans to bras on cold. Can't be bothered separating. That's for housewives and people who enjoy doing laundry, not for Aspie authors who don't believe in doing housework.

P.S. My boyfriend does his own laundry. As well he should.

If you occasionally wash the whites (white t-shirts, undies, socks) in hot water, with a cold rinse, but the rest of the time wash everything in cold, you'll be fine.

I'm a 45 year old mom who does a load every day for my family. I separate by:
whites (with bleach and hot water)
reds/blacks/purples: cold water
everything else in warm or cold water.

DON'T mix red/purple/black with whites or lighter colors or stuff will end up pink.

I've always thought the logic of washing with hot water was killing 'germs'. A lot of white clothes that get hot washed are underclothes and socks anyway. But that's just my own hypothesis.

Todays laundry detergent does a good job of killing germs. The low viscosity of todays soaps breaks down the skin of the bacteria, killing it. Washing with boiled water is for camping.

Oops. I guess I shouldn't talk about getting clean. :P

re: hot water. Stains can be set in hot water (like dying them in), so you might want to use a stain remover first..;)

I've washed in cold water for years. No problems, it's saved money...and my whites are white.

I sort by darks, lights, and whites.

If your whites start looking dingy...presoak them overnight with a bit of bleach and run them through as the first load in the morning.

Go easy with the fabric softener...as it will also dull your whites and some lights over time.

If you have cistern or well water high in minerals the water can also leave your clothes dingy. I had a friend who always had a problem with this...it wasn't how she did the clothes...she just had crappy water.

I've been washing clothes in cold water for a long time... no problems.
I also do not separate my laundry other than.... clothing, towels, bedsheets, grungy stuff like rags and bathmats.

I have had no problems washing colored clothing with whites.
If I use bleach, it's not to whiten things, it's for the antiseptic qualities.
When I have a new piece of colored material to wash, whether it's a pair of jeans, sheets, or towel, I wash it alone or with like-colored materials in warm water.

When I'm sure it's not bleeding color anymore, then I wash it with my regular laundry.

In our house, we don't wear much in the way of white clothing, so my experience may be different because of this.

I use the bulk liquid detergent from my local CO-OP (organic food store), and I now own a front-loading washer and matching dryer.
The front-loader spins the laundry to an almost dry state!
Drying is short because of this.

I go to a laundromat, and some of the machines have settings for temperature, others for whites/color. I haven't really noticed much of a difference as far as temperature goes, except that colors might have a tendency to "bleed" when washed in hot water for the first time.

As far as stain removers go, there is a brand called Zout that I swear by. And no, I am not receiving any money from them. That stuff has performed miracles!

My school now has High Efficiency front-loading washers/dryers, and each run of a washer or dryer costs $1.25. So to conserve money, I just separate my clothes into two piles: darks and lights/whites. I never use the "Whites" setting, only the "Colors" and "Bright Colors" settings as the water's colder.

I've heard somewhere that baking soda may further whiten whites, but I've not seen much of an effect after adding baking soda to some of my loads. My mom always recommends pre-washing the socks with detergent, but there is no place I could possibly think to do that, so my socks always look dirty :(.

Pouring a little baking soda into the laundry basket may reduce some of the odor, but precisely how much is needed to make a noticeable difference, I don't know. You can also use baby powder to reduce the smell.

I personally don't care how I wash my clothes as long as my clothes come out smelling fresh.

No, I am partially color-blind, and almost ruined a load of laundry on two occasions. I am now forbidden from doing laundry.
