Its on the front page @cnn.com :D . What I personally think is that its too bad the US Navy isnt using a very small nuclear warhead(~1Kiloton) to vaporize the satellite and this prevent satellite debree from threatning other satellites and spacecraft.
The missile that will be launched does not contain any warhead-it will supposedly break up the satellite through sheer force of impact.

that's all it needs to do. Smashing it into smaller pieces to it disintegrates on the atmosphere upon re-entry.

Nonetheless, that DOESNT mean the pieces will automatically start reentry before orbiting a *few* more times where there is the risk that they smash into other spacecraft and/or satellites. Space Junk is becoming an increasing hazard.

That's right. Fidel resigned.

As for the satellite, I get tired of hearing that the reason is "toxic fuel." EVERY satellite, spacecraft, etc uses "toxic" fuel (at least as far as I know, correct me if this is wrong). So... there must be another reason for this. I would think it's either a political response to China or there is something else on that satellite that is bad...

It is a MILITARY Satellite, AND there is concern because of its size that it might survive reentry and crash down on earth causing possible damage and even death if it strikes a heavily populated area. I STILL maintain that they should vaporize it with a tinynuke.

You Are wrong about that. The satellite that was shot down use hydrazine which is quite toxic. Hydrazine and its derivatives are used on the Russian Vostok rocket.

The US and the USSR have had the capability to shoot down satalites since the 1980's and the satalite that China shot down was relativly close to Earth, so their capabilities are not quite up their with current US and Russian capabilities.

Hear, hear! Especially since its trajectory takes it over Switzerland. :? I'll post about it if I get hit by anything.

Remember when Skylab came down over Australia? Here's a cartoon from OMNI that I saved:

What makes you Sure that China's capabilities are not up to par with the US and Russia as far as antisatellite weaponry?
Just because they're newcomers doesnt necessarily imply that their tech is not up to speed. The US developed and tested an air launched anti-satellite missile in the mid-80s....so WHY the Hell ARENT they using it now????

They can't. There's a treaty preventing the detonation of nuclear weapons in space.

They would just shoot another one. They're bound to hit it eventually.

An American Naval destroyer shooting missiles at a satellite. This is really, really, awesome. :D

Actually.............they could but it certainly wouldnt look good . There really is NOTHING at this point preventing the US military from doing so but it isnt good PR for the US to overtly flaunt international law that way. I personally think that treaty should be nullified.

It's a military satellite, that means they can't tell you. It's classified.

The sky really IS falling!
