We finally got some pet chickens on Thursday.

They are bantem hens - 1 black, 1 white and 1 red.

My sons have named them Trucky, Sparkey and Freddy!

Now we're just sitting back and waiting for the eggs.

We did have 16 chickens about 3 years ago but Mr Fox got in and ate them all.

We have a new and hopefully secure hen house!

Helen

P.S. Did you know foxes were introduced into Australia in the 19th century by a gentleman who missed fox hunting (he'd come from England). He brought in a few foxes - and now they're a feral pest throughout Australia.

That sounds cool. Not all chickens are the same either. That's why some make better pets than others depending on their breed.

Chickens are such sweet creatures. I have a few myself and I love to watch them wander the yard, pecking at this or that. They each have their own unique personalities. One might not think that at first, but they do.

Make sure that you give your new chickens lots of pats! :D

Bantam hens are great, used to see them everyday at the pets corner at longford park when lived in Stretford.

People seem to bring a lot of animals to australia, huh. What kind of foxes are those? I assume red foxes.

Either way, congrats on the chickens. I expect pictures when you get them. ;D

I've got chickens too! :D They can't really lay any eggs, however.

That's very good, Helen!

Now you have to remember to make your own eggs!

I love chickens; my favourites are the white "Silkies".

One good reason to be anti-fox hunting. I know that introduced pests have had a bad effect of Australian wildlife.

That's cool! Congrats for your chickens!

I've got chickens too. My sister and I had chickens, two hens, when we were kids. Next, my cousin gave us one hen and one rooster, because he didn't take care of them. My hen began to lay eggs, and we got a lot of chickens. But an opossum entered to the chicken house and killed my hen. After some years, we gave my mom's aunt the chickens.

Now, my little sister wants chickens (she was 2 years old and very scared when we got chickens), but our new house doesn't have a good place for a hen house and there are a lot of cats on this neighborhood.

We have been keeping chickens off and on for years, we always have a few. They are mainly for eggs and then my dad sells extra at a livestock auction (usually extra Roosters). He prefers White leghorns, and Rhode Island reds, I liked the Buff Orpingtons he once had the best. He has also had some Black Sex-links, and some Araucanas. The Araucanas were pretty mean though. He has had other breeds too that I can't remember. He has a large number of chickens now, some white leghorns and some other kind I can't remember, all I know is that the other kind are poor sitters so he uses the white leghorn hens to sit on their eggs.

I love chickens! Used to have a flock of red junglefowl like this:

but then we moved.
Now we have them at the hospital grounds where I work. I hear them crowing outside my window. They make me feel like work isn't such a bad place.
