Wow, it's hard to believe it’s been 25 years since the year 2000. Time flies, right? I’ve been reflecting on that year, and it was a really good one for me, especially when it came to diving into the world of anime. So, here’s a little trip down memory lane:
First off, I got into Sailor Moon that year. Now, I had heard of anime before, but what really sealed the deal for me was a Sonic the Hedgehog comic that parodied Sailor Moon. Sounds weird, right? But honestly, that’s what pulled me in, and from then on, I was hooked on anime. It’s been a lifelong fandom ever since!
Beyond that, 2000 was full of great TV. I was watching reruns of Seinfeld (I mean, who doesn’t love a good Jerry moment?), Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and America’s Funniest Home Videos. Classic stuff! I also made it a point to watch Japanese news, which was an interesting way to stay connected to the other side of the world.
That summer, I went on a trip to New York and visited relatives in Virginia. I even managed to watch some baseball along the way, but I’m still upset that the Mariners didn’t beat the Yankees in the 2000 ALCS to meet the Mets. Talk about a missed opportunity!
Looking back, 2000 was a year of major shifts—both in pop culture and personally. It marked the start of my solid connection to the anime fandom, and it laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong passion. It’s crazy how much has changed since then, but in many ways, it feels like it was just yesterday. Time really does fly.
What were your standout moments of 2000? Any anime that got you hooked or memories you look back on fondly?

I was very anxious the night it turned 2000 because people in my community at the time were pushing the idea that that would be a likely time for Armageddon to come. I stayed up not watching the ball drop but rereading one of the Chronicles of Narnia books for the umpteenth time. I was in the mood for some comforting, childish escapism. That’s pretty much the only thing that stands out to me that year apart from getting baptized 3 months later which was a huge mistake. It was in a heated pool, so the water was nice and warm. I was self-conscious about Erik looking at my legs, though.

2000 was one of my best years. I was never unhappy for a single moment of it.
Although now that I think about it, I was never happy either. I didn't really feel anything all year. I suppose that's because I didn't exist.

I do not remember 2000 that well, somewhere behind a bong cloud, but I was doing well as a COBOL programmer, profiteering from the Y2K crisis. I just wanted to say that I still watch Jerry Seinfeld & have watched the entire series at least three times, probably closer to five, and began watching it again during the Christmas holidays as a pick-me-up. That show can make me laugh like no other. I really think Jason-Alexander is a genius of an actor.
